I mentioned a few weeks ago that my brother (the last 1st degree male relative who had not yet had prostate cancer) had had an elevated PSA and was seeking care. He had discovered that MSKCC did not want to see him unless and until he had a confirmed diagnosis of prostate cancer. So today he had a first consultation with a urologist at NYU (at the Madison Avenue NYU Center for Mens Health).
He met with Dr. Aaron Katz--was wondering if anyone had heard anything good, bad or indifferent. Thanks in advance!

Apparently he is, though he said nothing about it at the visit. He was very personable, very engaging; he took Mark in early. Mark's head (like mine) tends to rush to the very worst possible outcome. Anyway, the next step is a mpMRI, and then we'll see. Mark went there because (as I've said before) apparently MSKCC no longer will work guys up cold for PC--they only want to see you after your diagnosis.
Nothing Katz said made me think he was other than a straight-down-the-middle urologic surgeon. But his write-up (featuring cryotherapy AND integrative stuff) did give me pause.
If this is the same guy, I'd say you are lucky to have found someone so immersed in the subject!!! Advantage to living near the Big Apple...no one like that here in the PNW...at least i haven't found anyone with those credentials!!
They didn't always have that policy--not when I was treated there in 2018. I look at ratings, but mostly I don't count them too heavily unless they all point to the same problem. (For instance, a very nice dermatologist who lives around the corner from me, and his office is also in walking distance--many reviews said patients always waited too long in the office to be seen, and that was also my experience). For that matter I myself got a 1-star rating on yelp, because my receptionist had the nerve to ask him to pay for his dental visit.
Actually the brother in question is my twin brother--he's 3 minutes older than I am. The other brother, who's 7 years younger, was diagnosed several years BEFORE I was. He probably was diagnosed before going to MSK, because he lives down in Florida.
very impressed with Dr Wise, both as a physician and as a human
I have an appointment with dr. katz in a couple of weeks. supposed to be a total person kind of guy. every doctor i've met thus far doesn't care about me. they care about the cancer. msk doctors, stony brook doctors, even one guy from nyu. the nyu guy referred me to katz. I'll see what he's like. I'm looking to treat my hypogonadism after radiation. katz may be willing to do so. if he's not, i'm buying trt from a guy who makes it in his basement. But to your question; he comes very highly recommended.
