sma Alfamino

hi all, my little one nearly 4 months has been place on sma Alfamino due to being sick after her feeds and changing of milk brands also, with the original milk she would have 5/6 oz and nearly finish them. We started on the prescription milk today only one feed so far but didn't finish it and drank less than usually would, so can you still feed on demand with this milk or is it only the 5 bottles as stated? As in the original milk she would have around 5/7 bottles a day depending on the time she was up in the morning and because she would only sometimes drink 2/3oz so would offer more later if wouldn't settle nothing else would console her

thanks for any replies and advice

NHS Paediatric Dietitian here. This is much less palatable than standard formula or extensively hydrolysed ones due to its formulation. Try mixing it with a bit if what she was on before initially and you can build up the proportion of Alfamino to full bottles as she gets used to the taste. Or you can add some vanilla flavoring drops too. If accepting small volumes you can definitely feed more frequently/on demand to get good total volumes in as long as you're not pressuring to take feeds she is refusing as this may make her more aversive. Monitor poos and wees and general demeanour to make sure not showing signs of dehydration on smaller volumes. Volumes needed are not really what the tin says for age - more based on weight (150 ml or 5 oz times weight in kilos) and also following baby's lead as to what they will accept. If really refluxy for example I wouldn't expect them to take such a big volume in one go but feed little and often like a younger baby.

thank you so much for your reply, I've always gone with her lead as at birth lost almost 10% birth weight so needed to feed every 2 hours but since going over the weight she never really finished a bottle so I do what she will take usually 6am has 6oz and finishes and has 5oz during day don't always finish so never upped it as thought it was a waste of milk after trying a few weeks then for the last bottle of the day she has 6oz and mostly finishes it, I feel very lick as she sleeps through from around 7-8pm - 5-6am. We have lots of wet nappy not so many soiled but when does is very loose and still green at start was going once every 7days although had been trying in the days before and could see the pain. This is why my gp thinks it could be milk allergies as been like it from birth but was only small amounts.

She seems more herself and not really crying after having milk now fingers crossed this works

Thank you

Sounds like it could be milk allergy. Be aware on specialist formula poos may still be green and watery but the reflux, vomiting, constipation, and unsettledness should improve if working but can take several weeks to do so fully so persevere!

Thank you I've read a little about it, I've gone through 3 brands in 16 weeks before going gp about it as knew they would ask if I'd tried anything before going but it's horrible watching them in pain so far it's been okay and it's only been 24hours
