Extremely high free beta HCG at week 12 screening

Hi i am38, pregnant via IVF for 1st child. 12weeks screening put me 1:40 chance for Down’s syndrome, due to very high hcg 5.83 mom. The rest are within normal range. Subsequent NIPT showed low chance for all three syndromes. Any thoughts if I still should do aminocentesis ? Any similar experience with such high hcg and what is the pregnancy outcome?

I’m sorry you’re having a worrying time. My understanding is the NIPT is far more accurate than the 12 week screening (particularly for Down syndrome, I think it’s 99% accurate) so if that has come back low risk for all three syndromes then I don’t think you need to also do an amino but that’s obviously only a decision you can make. Hi, with my 1st I got a 1 in 25 chance of downs from blood work everything else in normal range. Nipt came back low chance and it's more than 99% accurate so we didn't do anything else. She was completely fine and is now a healthy 3 and a half year old. I know how stressful it is though.

Hey I’m sorry I don’t have any experience 1st hand however how I’d maybe look at it was if you had the amnio and it came back highly likely would it change your mind on wether to continue the pregnancy? If you would continue regardless I’m not sure it would be worth the risk for me personally if I was in your shoes, I’m not 100% on the likelihood of risks of having an amnio done though xx

Hi ,

At my 12 week scan i was advised that there was a high chance that my baby would be born down syndrome . My daughter is 4 and i was offered amino but i declined it as i was tooo scared of miscarriage.

People will give you their opinion but what i learnt quickly was - you are the only one who knows how you feel. Xxxx

Thanks everyone for the reply. Provide update: My baby was born about a month ago. She is lovely and cute. No problem at all. For the ladies are in the similar boat as I was, don’t panic. Most times it would be fine😀
