Can too much amniotic fluid be dangerous on your baby?

At our 16 week private gender scan we were referred to fetal medicine unit because they discovered that there is too much fluid around our baby, ( Polyhydramnios) it was confirmed by the FMU and they recommended to do amniocentesis but I’m too scared because there is a risk of infection miscarriage and injury, they want to check the baby for any genetic conditions or any abnormalities but they also recommended the NIPT blood test to check for abnormalities. I went to the hospital 2 days ago because I thought my water broke and I was having contractions they did an ultrasound and said there is a little bit less fluid around the baby and everything is okay I stayed in for observation in the morning I had another ultrasound where they told me that there is very little fluid around the baby now they want me to still do the amniocentesis but I’m too scared they also ask me if I want to terminate my pregnancy. I’m so confused and scared this is our second pregnant and yet no baby.. 17 weeks 2 days please help!!

Hey Rainbow2403 i saw a post very similar to this yesterday on a Facebook pregnancy/mum page that I’m on and there was lots of success stories of women who had been in a similar position and lost their waters around baby, had been in a similar situation to you and asked if they would like to terminate. A few of them said that baby did have some problems but many of them have happy healthy children!🥰 from what I was reading many of them had to have stays in hospital on bed rest with lots and lots of fluids and many of them had early labours and stays in NICU with baby but as I said above also lots of happy endings, I wish you all the best whatever you decide is best for you and baby❤️

Good luck, update us if you wish and ask many many questions so your decision is informed and you don’t end up with any regrets xxx

Hi I was told about excess fluid at my 20 week scan. The midwife told me they don't know the exact reason for it apart from diabetes which can cause it. But I didn't have diabetes so they said they will do extra scans and monitor. I was also very anxious. At my 24 week scan the water had reduced so it was fine. I did scans every 4 weeks and had the baby at 41 weeks. All was fine. I think the risk is early birth if it had continued. Best to wait and see and don't let what you read in Google get you down. It only shows part of the picture. All the best and stay positive. Not good to stress. The way I thought about it is that there is nothing I can do apart from relaxing and eating healthy. The rest will work out on it's own. Take care

They didn't offer me any further tests. Only offered extra scans. Baby is just over 3 months and we are doing well. No issues.
