Mastitis symptoms

Has anyone experienced the shakes due to mastitis? I've been expressing breast milk for my twins for 3 and a half weeks now all going fine but this morning my boobs are sore and rock hard, around 5am I tried expressing as normal and I got very little milk and afterwards couldn't stop shaking for an hour, feeling hot and cold and nearly fainted when I stood up, could this be mastitis? Health visitor isn't available till 9 am so just thought I'd ask everyone on here. Thanks

Have you checked your temperature? A high temperature can cause you to shake and can be a symptom of mastitis if it's get bad enough to get infected. I would call your gp rather than health visitor.to be honest as I don't think HV can prescribe antibiotics. It's important to continue expressing as much as possible to keep things moving.

I had blocked ducts quite a lot when pumping, although luckily it never developed into mastitis. It's safe to take ibuprofen, and I found pumping after a warm shower often helped loosen the blockage. Hope it's sorted soon, I know how uncomfortable it is, and you must be feeling rotten from the mastitis xxx

Thanks, I've just had a hot water bottle across my boobs for an hour an expressing now seems to be softening the hard little lumps I could feel on my boob. The GP has said they'll give me antibiotics so if I start feeling the flu like symptoms again I can start on those straight away.

Thanks so much for your advice 👍

Don’t delay with getting help if things continue, I ended up back in hospital with bilateral mastitis and was in for almost a week on intravenous antibiotics, I would have gone through labour ten times over rather than mastitis, it was horrendous. Definitely similar symptoms to you, shaking, hot and cold etc which eased as time went by after pumping or feeding. Good luck, hopefully it will continue to ease and it’s just blockages 🤞🏼

Wow sounds like you had a tough time with it! I'm feeling better today but will definitely keep a close eye on it, I didn't realise it could get that serious. Thanks

Hi Yes that does sound like it but youve hopefully warded it off. Please do seek help if you feel poorly. The Breastfeeding network has a useful PDF on mastitis
