19 months, trouble with bowels

My 19month LG, has been having trouble going for a poo for a long long.

She used to go every day, then every 3-4 days, GP has given her lactulose, which I use every day. She has been going every day, but poo is very hard.

When she is trying to have a poo, she is crying in pain and flapping her arms hitting her lower tummy/front bum. As soon as she goes, she’s her normal self.

It’s breaking our hearts too see, is it best to phone HV or see GP?

I don’t know what else they could do

My LG really suffered from about 1 years old. I spoke to GP and they gave her movicol sachets to try which did work well. We still use them every now and again x

Thank you, she’s been like it about 2-3 months now. Been on lactulose for nearly 3 weeks, which does help. But surely taking that every day, should loosen up.

Il try and get GP appointment and hopefully will give advice or something else too help x

We had lactulose first and it didn’t help us at all. Movicol did wonders and we didn’t have to stay on it constantly but always have it on stand by just in case. It so horrible for them ☹️ xx

How's her diet? We've found fruit like, pears, prunes and plum etc good for having softer poop.

I cut up prunes into yogurt with some chia seeds too, plus lots of water seem to help.

We let our little one have the fruit pouches which have seemed to help keep her regular and she'd eats them happily.

I'd definitely call your GP and get some movical if she's having pain.

Good luck x

She’s stopped eating her veg and that was when all this happened. So I started giving her the pouches, which she will demolish, she will eat grapes, berries, banana, apple, plus the pouches. Just no veg at all, at the moment.

She drinks loads of water and we have started to give her some orange juice, to help her.

Thank you, I’m going to ring them in the morning, I doubt il get through though till the afternoon 🙄 x

I would avoid bananas as they can make poo hard. Prunes tend to work wonders. What about things like Weetabix? Does she like that? Hidden veg in stuff might be another option. Try decrease bread/rice as they're quite constipating and opt for brown where you can.

See when she stopped eating bananas, she stopped having a poo. Started eating then again and started pooing again.

She used too loved weetabix/porridge, but won’t eat it now. x

Maybe try the prunes... You can get them in purees too from Ella's kitchen. They were a godsend with my first.

Poor little thing. In the long term, if she's off her veg can you get more fibre into her diet in other ways? Porridge is great, my little one loves it with apple and berries. Or oats in any form. Papaya is also an excellent natural way for getting things moving.

I know it's obvious, but make sure she's drinking plenty of liquids. And remember things like rice, potato, cheese and banana can back things up, grapes, peaches, plums and orange are nice fruit to keep things regular. I hope it clears up soon, she must be really uncomfortable xxx

You could try porridge fingers with yogurt and fruit she may eat that or savoury flapjacks that are actually quite nice with carrot and courgette mixed in there are recipes in book what mummy makes it’s a way to get veg in also frittata might be something x

Aw what a little shame for her. Definitely try the prune pouches Ann17. You get Ella’s kitchen or Tesco own brand. My lb won’t eat prunes but devours the pouches.

Hidden in yoghurt or in a fruit pouch?

I was thinking that, will it still work? x

Getting any in will be better then none at all, it'll still work even if it's mixed in with something x
