Any other new moms with back pain?

I can think of several factors that may be causing my back pain. My 4 month old baby is nearly 9kg and my abdominal muscles are shot from pregnancy. There's also the stress of being a new mom. When he cries and I can't figure out how to calm him or I'm holding him in a slightly uncomfortable position, I can feel my back muscles tensing up.

I'm doing a lot of work to try to relax the muscles when I can, but I'm wondering if it's just me or if any other mamas are struggling with back tension/pain? If so, what have you tried that helps? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I should also say that I know I don't have an injury or serious issue with my back. It's just really tense and uncomfortable most of the day.

Thank you!

My LG is 8.1kg at almost 7 months and my muscles are still shot too! The only thing that helps me is ibuprofen and a hot bath or shower but that’s a temporary solution. It’s my 40th in April and I’m going to book some spa treatments, namely massage. Hubby looked into physio but that involves a course of treatment at £65 a pop! xx

Thank you for taking the time to respond and I’m relieved to hear I’m not the only one who is experiencing this. Physio is so expensive! I also don’t like that a lot of what they do is not possible for me to do at home. It depends on what you’re seeing them for though. I’ve been for various things in the past because my American insurance paid for part of it. I’d feel better while I went and then my issue would get worse again.

If I find anything that’s especially helpful for back tension/pain, would you like me to share? Xx

I never had back pain, even in pregnancy, but since having the baby I do feel it. In my case it's mostly from bad posture, leaning back and sticking my belly out when holding the baby slouching when breastfeeding or expressing changing the baby on the bed at my in-laws... I try to aware of my posture and have started doing core exercises again and stretching when I can. No time to go to the gym but I like the sworkit app - free and has some post pregnancy exercises you can do at home without any equipment xxx

Thank you for your reply! I’m sure I’m not doing myself any favors with my posture and ways I pick my son up. I’ll definitely work on my core. It’s just about now that I feel ready to do some strengthening work. If I ever consider trying again (we still have 7 frosties), I will properly train for it. Haha! No one told me what manual labor this whole mom thing was! Xx

See if you can find good, local postnatal Pilates class you can take baby to. Workouts at home are good, but if you have diastasis recti you must not do any an curls or sit ups until the muscles have come back together and try not to twist or side bend too much as this can affect those muscles and by going to a class the teacher can make sure you are doing the exercises properly to get the most benefit from them.

If you have any more questions about postnatal Pilates find me on Facebook: FlexiFitness St Neots.

Take care of your core, do those pelvic floor exercises and abdominal hollowing. Xxx
