Nearly 6 weeks pregnant, feeling very anxious and always imagining the worst, is this normal??? Also born with gastroschisis!

I was born with gastroschisis which is a birth defect myself in 1993, this involved my insides being on the outside when I was born, I was poorly for a month and a half after I had surgeries to repair, I was my mothers first baby. I have a medium sized scar on my belly so I'm worried about the ability of my stomach to stretch for a full term pregnancy, I'm worried the baby won't have enough room to grow, not seeing the midwife untill 9 weeks, just wondering if anyone else was in the same boat as me? I also worry my pregnancy will end in a misscarridge and it's making me anxious all th3 time worrying :(.

I haven’t been through this myself, but I’m sure if you phone the hospital and ask to speak to a midwife, maybe the supervisor of midwives to get a senior person with a wide range of experience, they will be very understanding and be able to talk to you about your experiences and all the thing you are worried about before your 9 week appointment. Don’t wait and stress about it. Scans are very good these days and will show all sorts of things so you can be prepared before baby is born. Best wishes x

I’m sure you’ll be ok scar tissue will stretch think of all those people that have multiple c sections or their appendix removed. Also I had a tummy tuck after losing 8st I was told I needed to wait a year before I could have a baby. Hope it all goes well for you x

I think its normal to be anxious during pregnancy, especially if its your first baby. Because of your medical history, your midwife will refer you to a consultant so you'll be well looked after during your pregnancy. Scans will detect if there are issues with your baby so you'll be prepared it it does happen. However, I think the chances of your baby having this condition are very slim. And I think it's unlikely the scar will stop your tummy growing, I have scar tissue from surgery a few years ago on my ovary and my belly is stretching out just fine! I was also a bit worried about the scar but its just stretched along with everything else and hasnt been painful at all.

Worrying about miscarriage is also totally normal, it is a real risk and a lot of the first trimester is just a waiting game. The raging hormones also dont help. Have you been diagnosed with anxiety before? Either way, you dont have to suffer in silence. If its really affecting you then you need to go and see your GP. Depending on where you live, I'm assuming you're in the UK, most areas have specific support for pre and post natal mental health.

Your scar should stretch, just apply plenty of bio oil or other moisturisers to ensure it’s as soft and supple as it can be. Mention your worries to your midwife at your first appointment and they will be able to reassure you x

Speak to your midwife. Just to reassure you, at 9 weeks pregnant a foetus is tiny, like the size of a grape maybe so don't worry about abdominal stretching just yet x

I can understand you are very concerned and it is very normal for most pregnant women especially if you have had health issues yourself. I would not worry too much about things stretching etc the body does marvellous things and even if the scar itself doesn't stretch the surrounding skin and muscles give way. People mange to have children after c sections where there is a scar in the uterus itself.

I would make sure you write down any questions you have for the midwife.

Congratulations

I can see this post is very old but wanted to tell you I’m in the same boat as you. Born in 1987 with gastroschisis. Currently pregnant and my scars are stretching beautifully.
