Hip pains

Hi all,

I’m 30 weeks tomorrow and for the last week or two I’ve been getting really bad hip pain with cramping down my thighs while in bed, it wakes me up at night and I have to get up for a bit until it’s gone. It only happens while I’m in bed and I fine when I’m on the move during day. I have a pregnancy pillow but it doesn’t seem to help. Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions as to how to relieve it?

Hi it is common to have hip pain during pregnancy but some of us have it much worse than others. You have a hormone called relaxin in your body so that you hips and pelvis can move to let the baby out. If the pain is extreme your midwife can recommend physio but it would have to be the extreme. I have had awful pain in my hips since around 30 weeks now 39+2 much worse at night plus sciatica which is an extra shooting pain which goes all down my right leg. Apparently my pain is worse because of the position of my placenta. I hope that you get some rest soon but try to console yourself it’s only till baby arrives it’s all worth it.

Thanks for the reply Mitch789, I guessed I’d have to deal with it. You are right though, it’ll all be worth it in the end 😊. Best of luck with everything, not long to go now xx

I have experienced similar pain in my left hip whilst sleeping too. I either wake up for a wee or my hip aches. I can’t get comfy on my right hand side at all (baby doesn’t like it either!). The only other position I can get comfy in is by sleeping in an upright/seating position with about 6 pillows behind me and 1 either side to stop me rolling off/over.

I never bought a maternity pillow but bought a lot of regular pillows instead as I thought they’d be more practical long term. I have to keep rearranging them 2-3 times during the night to keep myself propped up but I’m usually awake then anyway.
