Hi I'm 8 weeks pregnant. I went to see my GP once my husband and I found out that we are pregnant and my GP let me choose a hospital of my choice for future scanning and test, etc. She said she will write a reference letter to the hospital. In this case, do I still have to contact a midwife on my own? My husband and I moved to the UK just a couple months ago and this is our first pregnancy, thus we are not sure what are the procedures and what needs to be done.

Hi and welcome! Well if your doctor hasn’t referred you to a midwife you can ring your gp and ask them as I know they were changing the system soon as I was informed last year by midwife. When I found out I was pregnant I filled in a form at reception and they sent it to local midwife where they contacted me at 10 weeks pregnant! Just to be on the safe side contact your GP on Monday and ask there procedure. Congratulations xx

There is no standard procedure for all hospitals, it different for different hospitals. You can doubt check with the surgery reception if a referral has been sent which is normally enough otherwise you can normally contact the midwifery team yourself

This is my third pregnancy (we lost 2 babies previously) and I've chosen a different midwife this time. With my first pregnancy I just called my GP and asked to book in with the midwife. They usually see you between 8 and 10 weeks pregnant x

All areas have different procedures so you need to ask your GP. Some will have a midwife call you from their general office to arrange the booking in appt (about 8-10 weeks) others you call the number yourself x

Once I'd seen my GP (about 8 weeks I think) she sent off a referral and I got some paperwork from our chosen hospital within a few days. I also had a call from the midwife unit when we set dates for my 10-week and 12-week appointments. To be honest I was surprised at how infrequently the appointments happen but when you think about how many people must be having babies, I think it would be impossible to have any more appointments than you do.

Hi and congratulations!! I went to the GP as soon as I found out I was pregnant. She then gave us a few hospital options. Then sent out the referral letter to our preferred hospital. Within a couple of weeks, we received letters from the hospital regarding our booking-in appointment and 12-week scan.

Although this process might not be standard everywhere, so best to check with your GP again if you need to do anything.
