Exercising in pregnancy?

Hi,

Now that I am 12 weeks and am passing the horrible sickness phase. I would like to get back in to a proper exercise routine, however I am a little unsure of what constitutes 'safe' exercise. Previously I trained (heavy) weights and minimal cardio 3-4 x per week, but I've given up entirely mostly due to sickness and a little due to fear of causing any harm. Does anyone have advice on safe, whole body toning workouts that can be followed during pregnancy? Walking, swimming, yoga etc bore me.

Speak to your GP. I was advised to completely stop (interval training, weights) as my blood pressure was low and I have previously miscarried.

As previous respondent said double check but you should be fine. In addition check out your local facilities for Pregnancy Yoga and other pre natal exercise classes. A friend of mine found swimming very good as your supported by the water and remaining active increases blood flow and gets more oxygen etc to the foetus!

The relaxin hormone your body will be making while you're pregnant and can be present in your body up to a year after having a baby, makes you stretchier, so your pelvis can open up to allow baby out during birth, this affects every muscle/ligament in your body and that's why its advised to do gentle exercise. I know you say yoga bores you, but if you find a pregnancy yoga class you might make some good mummy friends with babies due around the same time as you, who will be a life line once baby arrives. Definitely speak to your GP and midwife and listen to your body. Good luck.

I was doing weights and interval training till I was 16 weeks, as I didn't know I was pregnant, but when I spoke the the midwife she told me not to continue and I've taken up swimming instead. It is great support.

Thank you all for your responses, it's pretty much what I thought. I'll look in to yoga as I do like the idea of mixing with more pregnant ladies! X

I'm a runner and was told I could keep doing what I had been doing before, for as long as it was comfortable (which in the end was only up to about 5 months). Nothing intense or high-impact. If you go to any classes that aren't specifically for pregnancy try to talk to the instructor beforehand. Some help at nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy....

I should say I also did some pregnancy yoga and really enjoyed it, unfortunately the instructor has taken 2 months off for the summer which is a bit of a pity!
