Many people recover from PMR in a couple of years, for others it can take 3 years and a few others even longer to go into remission. It can return but I have only so far heard of 2 recurrences out of many many people.

In the absence of a known cause, some people do consider that their PMR started after a very stressful period or event whilst others lay blame at the door of a previous virus or commencing statins. There is also a belief amongst some that it is caused by something in the environment.

Until cause and cure are found, we can only help ourselves both during and after PMR by avoiding as much stress as possible, taking special care of our health including having a good diet and getting plenty of exercise (gentle whilst PMR is prevalent) interspersed with plenty of rest.

I'm sorry to be able to give a more positive answer to your questions.

I stopped taking steroids two and a half years ago. It took two years for my body to readjust to life without steroids. I believe steroids cause pain in our joints, and this is a fact. It is only now that I am feeling much better, and the fatigue is going and life is worth living again. Be patient with yourself and give it time. Take care and hope this answer helps you a bit.
