Hi jinny,

Depending on your level of pain and stiffness an adequate dose of steroids should be between 20 and 30 mg to knock out the symptoms. If you are on less than 30mg and still having symptoms for more than 3 days then you need a higher dose of prednisolone. Until the pain is completely gone, you cannot start to reduce the doses of steroids. The whole idea of taking steroids in the first place is to get rid of the pain.

Hope this reply helps.

Hi jinny,

You have so much more than I to cope with regarding your general health, but as I said, the initial dose of pred should knock out the pain in no more than 3 days. With me (I have PMR) 30mg of pred left me pain free in 3 hours. If you were given less than this dose i.e. 20 or 25mg then it might take up to 3 days fo the pain to go. If you still have aches and pains then the initial dose was not high enough. If the symptoms do not go quite quickly then it is almost certain that you will have a flare in PMR and, possibly, your original symptoms may return. You cannot start on a reduction program until your pain is fully under control. Have you seen a Rheumatologist regarding your illness?
