so last week I felt I was flaring at 2.5mg ahead of a ski holiday so I upped to 5 . I’m on the holiday and have skied c 3 hours every day on mainly reds , even a black and I feel better than I’ve felt in ages and some of my shoulder/collarbone tightness is better than it’s ever been , I couldn’t even feel it this morning ( day 5 of holiday ) . My rheumatologist keeps saying they dispute the pmr diagnosis , my gp says it’s pmr . I am confused again as how am I physically doing what I’m doing and feel better ?? ( having a fab time for which I am exceptionally grateful ) x

Hi, I too skied both last year and this year, and every time I am on the mountain (skiing for a similar length of time and on similarly difficult runs), I feel that all my ailments are gone. Also, you doubled your steroid dose, so that may be helping as well. Good to hear you are enjoying your holiday.

whilst holidays can be a revelation I wonder if it’s got something to do with being on 5mg.

I was wondering if it means 5 mg is enough for my activity but 2.5mg isn’t and so I should go back slowly ?

I’d say so!

Doubled your dose? Should feel better - plus the feel good factor of holiday.

Crunch time will be when you return home and reduce Pred…

..and undoubtedly 2.5mg is not enough -but what is between that and 5mg is the question.

I skied with PMR - even with untreated PMR - and found that once I could get up the mountain and did the first short warm-up run I was able to move almost normally. I did red runs in those early days but our blacks have never appealed to me - my excellent skier daughter wasn't enthusiastic about them either and she's done the Men's Dowhill in val Gardena and rang me to ask where the Wall was as she'd not noticed it and didn't turn a hair at the Gran Risa where they do the giant slalom!

And having seen Snazzy's comment - I'd certainly wonder if 2.5mg is really enough for comfort.

Ahh val gardena brings back memories of wonderful holidays in Ortisei (summer and winter). I was always a lousy skier tho. 😄

It was on the Seceda run above St Ulrich that I broke my leg - never been back!!! I wasn't a bad skier, but could never call myself good compared with locals. I was rather mortified as my cousin informed the ski hire in the village he was an "excellent" skier - on the basis of a maximum of 10 days once a year! Doing blacks by dint of sheer brute force isn't the criterion for excellence. His son (who learnt at 6 and IS very good) expressed his opinion for me ...

Ah sounds like my ex husband who was a proud ! Black runner. He still goes back to ortosei 2 or 3 times every winter even tho he is mid 70s. Needless to say his opinion of my poor skiing did not help our marriage. God I can't imagine how painful breaking your leg must have been. Did they ski you down on a stretcher. I am glad to be out of the stress of lack of sporting prowess!

No - from Seceda down to St Christina is not on for an Akia as there is a tricky compression. So once I was in a vacuum splint I was lifted up into a piste-basher and taken up to the top of the gondola down to St Ulrich/Ortesei since there is a clinic there - which I bypassed as I had such severe pain on moving they assumed it was a break not soft tissue and needed Brixen hospital. The ambo journey from val Gardena to Brixen was interesting with all the bends to navigate! I shared a room there with Denise Karbon the Italian technical skier after her first major accident where she broke her femur and spent the entire season in traction. Of course nowadays it would be the helicopter ...

completely agree about the dose I know I’d be feeling fab on 5 & being in that wonderful air is so invigorating! Just back ourselves, sadly not enough snow for the serious skiers but I had some good walks. Take care to come down very slowly .
