Omeprazole capsules

Why is it capsules rather than tablets? Can you use tablets short term if you run out if your away for example? You can get the tablets over the counter can't you?

The dosage is the same as far as I can see, You could ask the GP why they prescribe you capsules rather than the tablets and the pharmacist (the pharmacist, not the counter assistant) should be able to explain too.
