can anyone help. I started on pred Jan 22 at 25 mg. Now on 1 mg for last week. When I reduce from day around taking 6 mg. After a few days of reducing. In the morning s. I come over a bit eeer. Light headed what you might call a funny turn. After being on lower dose for about A week. I am ok again. This is happening now on 1 mg. But doctor gp. Says. I should not have any symptoms now on 1 mg also I have not lost any of the weight belly bum and hair has been falling out for past few weeks again. Is this a sign of anything. Would appreciate any info thanks

you have dropped your pred very quickly so it could well be your adrenals struggling

thank you for your reply. Yes I am thinking you may be right

As stated, very quick taper, and no doubt adrenals struggling....although if it goes after about a week it could also be steroid withdrawal, but I would plump for adrenals being the major cause.,

thank you very much. It’s what I suspect do you think my adrenal glands should eventually sort themselves out after being off pred for some months

They will eventually, but can take anything up to a year....and a very fast taper especially at low doses won't have eased them in gently... so just be aware.

Did your doctor push you to reduce that quickly? PMR is a long term illness you would be lucky to get over it in less than a year, the average is 5.9 years.

no my doctor didn’t push. But was no help st all. As I felt ok with pmr. I just tried the next reduction and after a few weeks felt ok so tried just another reduction and so on. I thought I would just see how low I could go expecting pmr to show at some point. Of course I know it still can. I am still very wary

If you have got to 1mg with no problems that sounds good news. Just up the dose a bit for a few days and see if it improves things.

You have dropped from 25mg to 1mg in barely 7 months? Have you been dropping 1mg at a time? That would be a big change at this stage and your body will notice the change in dose,

25mg was enough to suppress adrenal function - but it is obviously adjusting slowly. The hair loss COULD be due to that but it is also still soon enough after the start for hair loss to be due to the events in January - 6 months after illness is a common time for hair loss to be noticeable.

this sounds interesting especially about the hair loss

I only started on 15 mg not 25 mg sorry I must have pressed the wrong digest. 15 mil to 1 mg. Going down 1 mg a time

Nevertheless, still fast. And below 5mg 1mg at a time is a big step. Bodies take time to adjust, not machines ...

yes ok I hear you. Hopefully in time my adrenal glands will get back to normal. So the slow taper is more for the adrenal glands than the pmr. Or 50. 50.

Very often 50/50 -slower taper helps both aspects

PMRpro profile image

Both - in PMR it is important to identify the right dose and the slow taper makes that more likely - if the drops are too large then it is easy to overshoot. For example, 7.5mg may be plenty, 5mg too little. But you have to identify whether you need 7mg or 5,5mg as there is a fairish difference,

I had funny turns in the morning when I tried to reduce from 4 to 3.5mg in one go. Now I reduce by 0.25 or even an eighth and haven't had the experience again

thank you. Yes it must be to do with dropping dose.
