Just because you have had two jabs doesn't protect you entirely, especially against the delta variant. You still need to face, space and wash ...

This is why i am so glad I live in Nova Scotia and not Alberta where indoor masking no longer needed, quarantining when you are sick recommended but not required, no testing unless you are sick enough to be in hospital. I repeat, so glad I live in Nova Scotia where we still have to be masked indoors, asymptomatic testing is a thing and you go into isolation when positive, whether you feel sick or not.

Still masking in Ontario.

I'm thankful my grands and family are in Nova Scotia.....totally different attitude than the States. They actually feel a sense of responsibility.

We are all getting very tired! But at least so far we are doing well. The alpha wave earlier in the year was a big scare - briefly our community had the highest rate in the world. However we were not as frightened as in 2020. Line ups (distanced) at multiple asymptomatic testing sites really helped keep a lid on things, plus border controls and tracing. Multiple layers of protection. And we finally got enough vaccines so people like me only had a three month wait between shots instead of four, and younger people have been able to get their second doses at four weeks. Still too many people not vaccinated though, so indoor masking requirements remain in place. Otherwise life very much back to normal. Still not travelling to Ontario to see my daughter, though, nor they to us. I think they won't come until vaccines are approved for the younger children.

I salute the way NS has handled the virus~! My grands just got their second shot last week. Fingers crossed I shall see them soon after two years! My 13 yo grandson had a cold recently and....woosh, off he went for testing. NOT Covid. Sadly, the majority of the folks I know in the states don't react that way....they wait until they feel they need the ER~! We are all tired for sure...but for me, my mask is my best line of defense.💖

This is why I am cross with a friend who refuses to get vaccinated (she claims she has a good immune system and doesn't want an experimental vaccine). I am the one who has to keep her mask on while she sits there sipping her coffee (we are at a picnic table outdoors) and out of abundance of caution I've decided I will have to remain masked whenever I am with her, because who knows when the delta variant will arrive in our community? I feel if she is the one who is remaining unvaccinated she should have the courtesy to mask when she's not actually drinking her coffee so at least I could enjoy a tea. A third person is with us, who is fully vaccinated, and much less concerned than I am - but she is not on an immune suppressing medication!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to HeronNS

And there is emerging evidence that the delta variant is still a major problem outdoors.

The Guardian link someone posted is about a fit, healthy , mountain climber in his 40s who said the same - until he was in ICU and needed to be intubated ... By which time it was too late.

theguardian.com/world/2021/...

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply to PMRpro

Exactly. That is why last week I said I wouldn't be taking my mask off or having a tea even though we were outside the whole time. She knows exactly why I am behaving this way although she will not discuss the matter and I'm not going to do anything more than act in my wonted passive-aggressive fashion! If weather dictates we must move indoors I will not be there! So far only cases of delta here have been in travellers who are self-isolating upon arrival. Soon fully vaccinated travellers will not be required to quarantine, so where that will get us, who knows? We are the last province in the Atlantic region to remove indoor masking requirements and just maybe when we do the CMO will be able to keep it as at least a very strong recommendation even if not a rule. Btw, I'm not sure, but I have a feeling she may never have had a vaccination for anything, ever in her life. Well protected by the nearly universal vaccination levels of those around her, I guess. She's 69. I still remember the smallpox vaccines I had as a child and even into my twenties, and how the polio vaccine changed all our lives in the summer of, I think it was,1956.

Thank you so much for posting this very interesting report. I shall be producing it to those in my family who think me and my partner are bonkers for still wearing masks and avoiding indoor gatherings 😔

Thanks for this Pro, really confirms what we suspected and why there wil be little change in behaviour, masks etc in this household.

My daughter and her partner booked a table at a local pub with four other people to watch the Euro Final on 11th July. All had been fully vaccinated and three of them went down with Covid shortly afterwards, necessitating ten days of self-isolation for all of them. I suspect they started off wearing face masks but, what with the excitement and drinking beer, they were discarded at some point. My daughter's partner was rather ill (he has asthma) We're just thankful that, if he had to get it, it was after his vaccinations, as we're pretty sure it would have been a lot more serious if he'd caught it before.

I've travelled on the Tube a few times since our so-called 'Freedom Day', 19th July and most people are abiding by the Mayor's request to continue to wear masks for the time being. The same is true of the buses as well as shops. People were wearing masks when I went to the cinema yesterday and also today when I went to the Museum of London Dockland branch. This suggests to me that most people are responsible which is rather reassuring.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Marijo1951

Unfortunately - one irresponsible person is enough to infect a LOT of others in a restricted space. And there is some thought that you can catch the delta variant within a few minutes.

Marijo1951 profile image
Marijo1951 in reply to PMRpro

Given the disappointing result - well maybe not to you as you live in Italy - I think they wish they'd just stayed at home and watched it. By the way, we don't know if this is significant, but the three who caught covid had all had the Astra Zeneca jab. Those who didn't had the Pfizer version.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Marijo1951

Bet it isn't unconnected. I remember the sense of relief I had when told my jab would dbe Moderna - I'd have prefered Pfizer but it was second best.

Marijo1951 profile image
Marijo1951 in reply to PMRpro

Oh golly, I had the AZ! Maybe I'd better stop my new gadding about, but it's so nice to be going out again, especially as my deathly fatigue has abated somewhat recently. We're still very well spaced at the cinema and numbers entering various venues like museums are restricted, but maybe the risk is still high...

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Marijo1951

Wearing a mask and keeping a distance will help - you don't have to stay in the house. I have had to go out all along, pre-vaccine too, and so far haven't caught it! I admit I don't have a whirling social life except online ;)

Marijo1951 profile image
Marijo1951 in reply to PMRpro

I don't exactly have a social life, but do enjoy museums and galleries and the local library and, above all, the cinema as there are so many brilliant new films doing the rounds at present. I'm also going to see a very old one tomorrow 'Now, Voyager' with Bette Davis in a newly restored version.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Marijo1951

Here we have to have a Covid Green Pass to go to such places so at least one knows anyone else has also had both jabs. But what I'm saying is that you still need to keep your distance and wear a mask.

Marijo1951 profile image
Marijo1951 in reply to PMRpro

Agreed, and most people comply, and cinemas and theatres are still leaving large spaces between seats. Unfortunately mask wearing can no longer be compelled by shops etc, although Transport for London does have the power to create its own bye-laws and I understand the Mayor has done so regarding mask wearing.

I don’t fancy the Cinema but we have Theatre Tickets for the end of September & then the rescheduled shows come thick n fast!….We have our rescheduled Sir Tom Jones in The Park at the beginning of September but that’s outside, which is kind of different, it’s only a mile n half from home, which is incredible, l hope the weather is better than it is now! The kids can’t come from France, as it’s just too risky, which is a shame as it was to be a whole Family Event when it was originally scheduled for their 10th Wedding Anniversary last year in June! I’ve just transferred him the money back but something is nagging in my brain that we bought them in the first place 🤔 l shall have to investigate!….

Marijo1951 profile image
Marijo1951 in reply to MrsNails

I went to the Hampstead Theatre in July. My original ticket was for March 2020. All the seats in my row were out of use except for mine and one at the other end. They put paper cutouts of famous actors and actresses on the other seats, which was a bit eery. It's strange, while I certainly don't want to be cheek by jowl with people at present, the current restrictions definitely put a damper on these occasions. Good luck with Sir Tom - hope it doesn't rain cats and dogs as it is here at the moment.

Bcol profile image
Bcol in reply to MrsNails

We've had a number of theatre trips booked for the last 18 months which we have been postponing until a later date but think we have now finally cancelled the last of them, for a full refund, as we can see no interest or possibility of us getting to the theatre in the foreseeable future.

Everyone in Canada who had not yet had second AZ was recommended to follow up with mRNA, because by the time we had enough vaccines in the country it had become clear that mRNA would be more effective against existing variants. Even double-dosed mRNA people have caught covid, or have become asymptomatic carriers. We are nowhere near out of the woods yet - in fact I fear we are only going further into the wilderness,

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to HeronNS

The local epidemiology guru was saying much the same on the radio this morning - the delata variant hasn't entirely escaped the vaccine but it os a close thing. You might not die if you've had 2 jabs but you can still pass it on - and there are a lot of unvaxx'd out there who will be vulnerable whether they like it or not.

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply to PMRpro

This is one of the main reasons we will not be travelling to see our Ontario family - an unvaccinated 2-year-old there, and me who may or may not have a perfect response to the vaccine. We think it's a risky combination, so rather than take a chance on either of us carrying the infection to the other we're waiting to see what unfolds over the coming months.

Marijo1951 profile image
Marijo1951 in reply to HeronNS

Here in the UK, there's talk about oldies being offered an extra booster this Autumn about the same time as the flu jab. If so, I'll do my best to get the Pfizer.

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply to Marijo1951

Good idea. As I'm double-pfizered I would prefer any booster offered to us be confined to those amongst us who are are extreme risk, and otherwise we work on getting the rest of the world vaccinated. As AZ may not be as effective against the variants, in your position I'd happily accept the booster!

For the first 6 days they were quite poorly - severe headache, nausea, aching muscles, sweating, loss of taste and smell and a slight cough. No breathing difficulties. Started to improve on day 7 - now on day 9 and still feeling washed out but not as bad. Seems the vaccine helps to prevent severe disease and hospital for most. The good news is that my sister in law has an autoimmune disease and is on meds but was no worse than the others. All had AZ vaccine.

Guess I'm lucky no covid in New Zealand, hope it stays that way.

Yes, grandson ( fully vaccinated), roommate and three friends got COVID at same time. No telling where they’d been. Grandson in quarantine says it’s like a bad cold for him. Slowly feeling better, but still no taste. Since I live in a state full of stupids, will be wearing a mask for who knows how long, unlike most others here. 😒

"Prof. Andrew Noymer, Ph.D., an epidemiologist at the University of California at Irvine, told the BMJTrusted Source: “If the vaccinated can [contract the infection] and, we believe from other studies, potentially spread [SARS-CoV-2], then herd immunity becomes more mirage than oasis.”

I always suspected that herd immunity was more of a marketing ploy then reality ;)

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to pmr_nikola

Ditto - but to non-scientists it sounded so appealing didn't it? I have said from the start of the vaccines - they are fine until the virus does what viruses do: mutate. That's what they are born to achieve. Once the mutation is far enough - you need a new vaccine for any effect. And effectively we are back in the Middle Ages and the plague without antibiotics ...

Grammy80 profile image
Grammy80

So true, Pro...I mask and really don't understand non-vaxers. All we can do is protect ourselves because you can bet there is another variant on the heels of Delta. There are politicians in the US, Governors of States, who are declaring it is 'illegal to mandate masks'. Need I say more? So cover-up.💖 I will definitely be getting a booster too, but the best thing is self-protection, I feel.

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to Grammy80

What I don't understand with non-vaxers (good word that) is that they obviously don't care if they get the virus but don't even care about passing it on to their loved ones and friends. Of course they don't believe that thousand of people are suffering terribly and hundreds and hundreds are dying daily with these dratted illnesses every day! 😕

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Constance13

I honestly don't think they really appreciate the risks - or don't want to. But there are increasing numbers of postings on social media from people who have caught it and are now in ICU - because they hadn't had their jabs. The cases in ICUs now are almost exclusively anti-vaxxers.

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to PMRpro

But surely they should KNOW the risks by now - or are they 'above' bowing to the masses?

Last sentence! I read that somewhere too. Heaven help us!

Just yesterday I had a woman tell me, and she believes this from 'her news', "Did you know that 67% of the people who get the vaccine die?" There is no room for conversation there!!! With the Candian arm of my family, it is obvious that they care as much about the general population as they do protecting and caring for their family. Not the case in Indiana. However, the rise in number recently is creating what I call 'closet vaxxers'.

Highlandtiger profile image
Highlandtiger in reply to Grammy80

I’ve heard about closet vaxxers from my friend in Minneapolis. Also anti maskers who are now (perversely) wearing masks because they claim people who have been vaccinated shed on them... As she said she's just happy they’ve started masking at all, for whatever reason.

Meantime here’s another article (from the US this time) about someone who disseminated false information and changed his mind too late.

I've seen that claim too. I think there are definitely evil trolls out there who deliberately tell these lies just because they are bad people who want to cause trouble, and too many are ignorant/stupid/naive/brainwashed enough to swallow the lie. When you catch a glimpse of the dark underbelly of misinformation being fed to the population in the US (and no doubt beyond) it is beyond disturbing, it's really frightening, not so much because of the lies themselves, but because so many people are believing them, or worse, acting on them.

Well, here is the source of much of it:

There apparently are only a couple of handfuls of people/sources responsible for almost all the misinformation.

I didn't find the 67% claim so no way to know the source, but it's possible it's been removed from search engines in an effort to curtail its spread.
