Blue hands???

Hi this may of been asked a thousand times, and I am sorry in advance but something is going on in my body and when I put in my symptoms to Google dr it always comes up with PMR.

So I do not have a diagnosis, but I have been flippantly diagnosed with fibromyalgia.

However this week I have had the following concerning symptoms that are new. I even was taken to a & e but was barely looked at. Also I am phoning gp tomorrow.

So symptoms : Swollen painful left thigh, pain radiating to knee and buttock (I also have sciatica diagnosis but again only by symptoms.)

Pain from left shoulder down to fingers.

Waking up in morning with my knuckles wrist and finger joints on both hands tinted blue, that does not change with heat. And this morning the pain in left hand is excruciating.

I am only 40 yo. My mum has been diagnosed with PMR and RA.

Are these symptoms?

TIA

Hi, Not sure that blue hands as such are a sign of PMR, it’s certainly not discussed a lot on here.

PMR pains are usually bilateral, apart from your hands, most of your issues seem to be unilateral.

Have you investigated Raynauds syndrome? This site may help - it’s covers all forms of arthritis related issues -

Thank you.

The Reynauds seems to be linked to cold. I’ve had my hands under my heat pad for an hour and it’s still the same. I’ll keep looking into it. Thank you for your help xx

Yes it is more related to cold - the only other thing I could find on blue hands was related to insufficient blood flow - do you have any issues relating to that? Also Covid was mentioned.

Hopefully GP can help.

Does surgery have an eConsult facility - then you can send a photo?

I’m not sure but they have email. When I take a picture it doesn’t show as well as looking at it. But my husband and daughter have seen it so I know I am not loosing my mind. As you know half the trouble is you can’t see our pains etc so no one believes you.

None of what you describe would make ME think PMR and really nor would it trigger thoughts of fibromyalgia - cynically I'd say a lot of doctors use that as a way of getting rid of a patient when they haven't a clue and don't know how to manage the problem. There is nothing that really works for fibro (possibly of course because it isn't "fibro" so they aren't using an appropriate treatment).

If I were making a stab in the dark at that I would wonder if there is a problem with ulnar nerve entrapment in the left shoulder. And I really do have to ask if they did a blood test at A&E to rule out a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) in that left thigh - swollen and associated pain due to sciatic nerve problems, it is a possibilty. Or something else interfering with blood flow or trapping the nerve somehow - there are several potential reasons for sciatica.

Did A&E say anything to you to explain what they thought it was? Left sided symptoms of that sort are often associated with anxiety and hyperventilation - was/is your breathing normal: regular, slowish and deep?

The A & E dr could not be any less interested. I initially thought it was side effects of contraindications of 2 antidepressants. The dr didn’t even talk about the blue hands as at that point they were not blue. It only happens when I wake up.

I also think a trapped nerve but no painkillers including NSAID, Volatarol, or cocodomal are helping. I’ve been seeing a physio since Christmas and was actually there on Monday.

I’m in so much pain on my left side I’m desperate for help.

I'll lay odds that being on medication for depression and left-sided symptoms led to a "anxiety, next please" attitude.

Yeah absolutely. No tests were taking. Didn’t even ask about other symptoms,

Not good enough!

It's not! The more I look into it, I think it is nerve pain, but they need to stop assuming sciatica pain. So I might demand an mri as I know xrays don't show up everything.

I just want to sleep for at least 1 night of 8 hours.

I think it could well be sciatic pain in the leg - but the cause needs to be identified. The pain is the result - not the diagnosis of a cause.

Blue hands can be caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood. It may be due to chronic underlying conditions such chronic heart disease or something else.

Thank you everyone. Phoning go at 8 am. Went to bed at 5 last night. Back up as in pain so needed painkillers 😕.

I got all those before PMR diagnosis. See what Gp has to say. Good luck

GP says that due to the current stressful situation I am in my Fibromyalgia has worsened. I meant to ask for a blood test but I forgot. Probably will show nothing anyway as usual.

Okay...so just take painkillers then or any other useful help?

No just that, they see fibro diagnosis and just assume it's all fibro related. It's frustrating. But the fibro chat no one has had the blue hands. Yet my mum has and she has RA as well.

Must admit I did wonder about RA - have you asked on their forum - see you’ve posted there before for your mum.

No I don't think so. I will do that thank you. Xx

My hand today

My wife saw your picture and immediately said Reynauds. Her doc says to make sure she doesn’t let her hands and fingers get cold. He prescribed Amlipodine to help her blood flow. I am just passing on what she just said. Nothing more. I know nothing about Reynauds.

DorsetLady profile image

That was my first thought - but Furmummy not sure as hands don’t seem to respond to warmth.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to DorsetLady

Reynauds isn't just a response to cold - it can be anxiety or emotional stressors too. And the image she put up isn't typical so many doctors won't recognise it, they expect it to be totally dead white fingers.

My wife just told me that hers starts out blue, but eventually turn white. The doc says he really doesn’t want her up skiing and snowmobiling anymore.

Haven't come across it taking time to happen - it is a vasospasm so usually quick. But I suppose if your hands get cold slowly it will finally tip over.
