Troublesome crops of warts

Apparently warts in adults are a sign of a dysfunctional immune system, according to the Mayo clinic. Over time I have developed clusters of small warts on my chest, back and legs. Apart from being unsightly, they catch on clothing and sometimes really itch, especially in warm weather. Has anyone in our age group successfully treated this sort of thing, or am I going to be stuck with them? The pharmacy treatments seem to involve burning them off and they often return. Surgical removal seems to leave scars. I need something for the itch. There are definitely more of late. Can any of our bush doctors help? Tenuous link to PMR as it is autoimmune . Thanks!

As it happens I have them! Always had an

odd one but lots now. You wouldn’t get them removed on the NHS I’m afraid. My friend had/has them and they itch like crazy - she didn’t get very far with Dermatology so buys the kits and her daughter burns them off - mainly because of the itch as they’re so distracting.

She doesn’t have an AI.

Thank you. These kits have the acidic formula and an applicator presumably? Does she recommend a particular make? I had a really tormenting night with it. No I wouldn’t dream of seeing my GP not now or in normal times. Private Dermatologist, I thought, but probably a waste of money. These warts are an autoimmune presentation in themselves apparently.

Yes they do - usually for verrucas can’t remember the name it’s well known. Her daughter is very careful in application - they’re on her back so she couldn’t apply herself. You do have to be careful. They’ve stopped the itching and she moisturises well where they’ve been. Not ideal solution but desperate measures.....

I have used buzzuca. Seems to work. Stops the itching

I went through years of warts, I think because in my job I was constantly washing my hands so they were rarely deeply dry for hours. I tried everything. Acid was ok until it got to good skin level whereupon it caused a halo of inflammation around the wart no matter how careful I was. You need to get to the root which is below the level of the good skin. Often new warts grew on the good skin that had been inflamed. I had one on my finger frozen and the practitioner over did such that the bone hurt for weeks. Sorted out the wart but it grew back on the scar a few years later. So, the one thing I have found to be effective is an occlusive dressing worn continuously for weeks and occasionally months. The best for me because It is comfortable, conformable and discrete is Duoderm extra thin, cut to shape. I got mine from Amazon. If the wart is a bit high I use the acid then stop before it gets to the skin level, then switch to the Duoderm. Any hydrocolloid works and indeed I know some dermatology people suggest duct tape.

SheffieldJane in reply to SnazzyD

Thanks Snazzy, yes I have heard of silver duct tape being used too. I will look into this.

SnazzyD profile image
SnazzyD in reply to SheffieldJane

I tried the duct tape but found it not very reliable at sticking on when the skin sweated or any water got to the edges. Although the Duoderm is not as cheap it lasts for ages because you can cut it to wart size bits.

in reply to SnazzyD

Does it have to be silver duct tape??? The black duct tape is like a second skin!!!

"it has been suggested that duct tape occlusion therapy only works with rubber-based adhesives"

So maybe it is the adhesive ...

I’ve used both and not seen any difference in efficacy. It is the property that it is sealing off the wart that is important.

The gorilla tape stuck to my dogs bed and I haven't the strength to.pull it off! 😂🤣😂

That's really interesting Snazzy, thank you. I have a couple of recurring warts on 2 fingers. I have some Duoderm in so I will try it.

Yep, I have them on my hands. Got them treated with liquid nitrogen and that worked for a while. Some small ones are starting again, though.

Smokygirl profile image

Yes, me too! Hate them! Also over my legs like raised dry skin. And itchy.

I got rid of a few permanently with Duct Tape, but it takes months.

It works , though it has to be the very strong transparent tape.

It also works well on a small flat one on my nose but if I stop putting it on at night it comes back. I think it’s because I wont keep it on during the day. X

SnazzyD profile image
SnazzyD in reply to Smokygirl

It does need to be 24 hours a day. I don’t think the transparency is important.

Smokygirl profile image
Smokygirl in reply to SnazzyD

Yes, the transparent duct tape has stronger glue!

SheffieldJane in reply to SnazzyD

Surely you need to change it or your skin would go funny.

SnazzyD profile image
SnazzyD in reply to SheffieldJane

It falls off way before that happens, especially after showering, so you just put a new one back on. I’ve never had a skin problem with it.

Smokygirl profile image
Smokygirl

No, strangely enough your skin seems to like it! The wart goes gooey and every five or six days you have to scrape it off but ultimately it goes completely! I’ve found it works on some warts but not on others!

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply to Smokygirl

How interesting - I mean really.

PMRpro profile image

The idea is that the affected skin DOES go "all funny" - it is the same with all the techniques, they must be kept to the affected area and not allowed to be in contact with healthy skin.

Hi SheffieldJane,

Not sure if you are able to try this and if you have access to a frangipani plant but I believe the sap from the frangipani has been used on warts with some success, the sap is poisonous so avoid mouth eyes etc. hope this gives you an alternative.

Enjoy good health,

I’ve been on prednisone for 3 years and have had all manner of strange reactions to it, one of them being my hands and feet being covered in warts, then after about 18 months they all simply disappeared, currently can’t even see any evidence as to where they were

Hi. Try using BBC Trust Me, I'm a doctor, Series 3 episode 3. States not available, but if you scroll down to " Can duct tape cure a wart or verruca" and see the detail of how to use tape for 6 days per week and air skin for one day. I tried this following the programme and after 9 weeks wart on hand was gone, no scar and no return so far, a couple of years on.

To shine hope on this PMR....... Me. Diagnosis July 2015, started on 15 mg Pred. Several flares. Masked osteo arthritis pain but needed 2 hip replacements in 2018 which were successful. Now reduced, and last 0.5 mg Pred will be taken in 4 days time.........used DSNS. Feeling euphoric, even in these social distancing times. Valerie.

Over the years, had a few which were removed by cryotherapy or cryosurgery - using liquid nitrogen. Successful, but there is one rascal which refuses to die. Once things at the doctors' surgery have gone back to normal, I'll ask if it can be done away with by using a taser. Seeing a scar is far preferable to seeing a wart.

I had read previously that it could be linked to a calcium deficiency.

I woulf more likely be due to the suppression of the immune systen by the pred.

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane

That’s interesting. I stopped taking Adcal because of cystitis symptoms. I assumed it was linked to a suppressed immune system.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to SheffieldJane

Much more likely to be a purely mechanical problem with calcium.

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane

Yes, I meant a Calcium deficiency encouraging the warts, possibly.

I have had warts on both thumbs for many years. I have tried surgical removal and all the usual over the counter remedies. Each “cure” was only followed by their reappearance.

But having been on prednisolone for 2.5 months I have noticed how much these warts have grown and they are so unsightly. They are huge! Does anyone know if the drug is the reason?

Tamtan2 profile image

So pleased you posted this I’ve been worried about the amount of warts I am getting they are unsightly thank you. X
