Sorry if this has already been posted, I hadn’t seen it. Hope for the (distant) future perhaps?

Gene associated with Autoimmune diseases
I hate the idea of a drug—for all kinds of reasons. I seem to have an intolerance for salicyclates, sulfites, all kinds of food, etc. , which undoubtedly contributed to my pmr, a while ago I read that people like me might be missing a gene that allows us to break down enzymes contained in these food stuffs. I wanted to have gene testing done to see whether that might account for my problem (this was pre-pmr) but that is largely unavailable in my remote neck of the woods and since my doc didn’t know anything about it, I never could get a referral. Since then, I’ve lost the link to the article about the specific gene...but in a nutshell, yes, I think genes might account for us.
It is fairly likely there is a gene - but they haven't found one yet! The trouble is, it is relatively easy when a single gene can be identified - but often there are several and if you remember you maths from school there can be a LOT of combinations!
And it means that one biologic drug might not do the job, it might need a multiple approach unless by eliminating one gene it stops the entire disorder. We know there are at least 3 different mechanisms for GCA.
But slowly, slowly, they will get there. Then it will just be a question of the money ...
Thank you for the link. I think it is going to take some time to sort out, while my brother and I have GCA I also have PMR. One of his children has Crohns two have RA, mine have asthma, eczema and sarcoidosis my granddaughter also has an autoimmune disease. We do get our money’s worth out of the NHS. 😩
Interesting. Thanks for posting.
