Be Careful!

I am writing to say that those skin tears so many of us get...from the thin skin from prednisone and whatever inattentiveness, faulty balance, toddler kick, or whatever even causes it are not to be taken lightly. I bonked my ankle on the car door and tore the skin and clean the wound and bandaged it. It healed very very slowly and when it was finally healed there was still a little bump at the end where the skin had not fully come off..(this is all VERY small) and it hurt if I pressed on it so I thought perhaps it was scar tissue but even though it was completely healed I thought to have it looked at last time and lo and behold squamous cell cancer. And it was activated by that cut. So Here is just a heads up to be careful!! I know someone wrote about socks that protect your legs from scrapes but I haven't the link. It is an English company and I would love to find it again. Anyone? thanks Bonnie

There is a firm called Limbkeepers Protectors that is in the UK and has various skin protecting products, like socks and sleeves.

What a shock Bonnie, thank goodness it was caught. How are you? What happens next?

Did they say that the injury had led to the squamous cell cancer? Or triggered an existing bunch of rogue cells that were lying dormant?

I am simply covered in weird moles and warty things. Showed a GP once and she dismissed it contemptuously. Let me know what happens.

I will It can't be too bad because they first said they could do the surgery on FEB 7 but I couldn't lift anything for two weeks and had to be really careful for a month so I mentioned that I was going to Mexico on the 18th of Feb for 5 days and they said OH then lets do it the 28th! Then I wrote my wonderful GP doc and told him to look at the records and did he think it was okay and he said it was also. And I am not certain, I think rogue cells got triggered.. I think it is that our immune systems are rickety ..from the prednisone...and couldn't fix the cells at the cut properly. Anyway I will be fine but it is unnerving. I too have the warty bumps and lumps and scratchy looking horrid gray things... but this just felt a little different. It was really small and a little shiny and if I pressed on it it felt like glass in there. Go with your instincts and see someone else if you doubt them!! Thanks xo

Have a wonderful time in Mexico! My son in law removes cancerous growths routinely in his surgery. Very common in Australia.

Sleeves, trousers, hat and sun block!

Yes Jane, there are skin cancer clinics everywhere here. Most people have regular checks. I think the highest skin cancer rate in the world. Schools have a rule ‘no hat no play’ and those children have to stay in a shady place during recess and lunch.

Try and use Double Base Gel to help protect skin. Follow the instructions to the letter.

For cuts or scrapes, manuka honey cream (expensive but brilliant) developed by Addenbrookes.

Green Lipped Mussel ointment.

Bruising, arnica tablets for inside, arnica cream for outside.

I do use manuko honey!! think it is the BEST thing for healing. I found it in Sweden when the clinic used it for my husbands infected wound instead of antibiotic cream!

I did mean to say, thank goodness you pressed the little lump as well. Enjoy your trip. xx

If no Manuka available ordinary raw honey is also very good for healing. Also dip end of plant cuttings in honey before planting to assist root growth.

Colloidal silver gel is also very good for wounds that won't heal.

I am to leave in about 15 minutes to have one of these taken off my right leg. I am not sure whether it came from a scratch, but think so.

Having the same problem but especially bad with my forearms I have found several things that help. Working in the garden, playing with the dog, or just scraping my arm on any little thing can cause bruising and possible cut.So I discovered that there are arm protectors (a sleeve that fits on your forearm up past your elbow a bit.) You can find them online. They are especially good in the summer when it is hot and you are wearing sleeveless or short-sleeved tops. Your forearms will thank you.

If you want to go cheap cut off the bottom of old socks and use the rest on your forearm.

If you want to dress up look online for the lovely arm covers that Muslim women wear to keep their arms covered. It could be a new fashion trend!

Oh thank you! I have been on Prednisone since early March and while it was really wonderful about 6 weeks into it my limbs started being covered with rosy colored bruises and my legs, especially one of them, with six tears, all lower leg, that are slow to non-existent in healing and one weeping. As that area then developed a painful burn I went to my Primary Care who started me on an anti-biotic. It is helping but still painful and present. I do have a history of adverse reactions to prescription medications and have often found the solution through naturopathic suggestions. The specialists who diagnosed and is treating the PMR has been most nonchalant and essentially dismissive-like it couldn't happen. Finding ya'll talking about this subject almost brought tears to my eyes. Thank you! I'm off to track down suggestions found here.
