Hi friends since my very first post on here I've now developed severe muscle weakness in my calves , thigh muscles and inside my forearms along with some slight pins and needles and slight numbness of a toe. I have no idea if it's from GCA or PMR or my 8th week of steoids
Please has anyone else had or having the weakness like me. My Dr took bloods today for a deficiency in Vit B12 plus for diabetes. ???

Hello. I’m afraid Pred can cause wasting of muscles, sometimes quite severely though there are other causes and sometimes medical opinion needs to be sought. I had it quite badly and it came in, it seems, quite suddenly at the 2-3 month mark and was worst until I got about 10mg. It is important to try to do what exercise you can (without injury) and have a good amount of protein in your diet. Another overlooked nutrient is magnesium which Pred tends to leach away; my muscles felt very weak if I didn’t take it. None of these things are the magic wand, but things to do to try to support muscle health. It is good that the docs aren’t just blaming Pred without thought, but don’t be surprised if they settle on it as the reason.
Thankyou SnazzyD oh gosh what a learning curve these medications are. Damned if we do and damned if we dont. I do take magnesium daily in amongst my calcium and D3 , fish oil, just trying to sort which time of the day is best to take all of them. I take my predisolone at 9am (after I return from my walk ) a 5mg of Prexum My blood pressure tablet at 6am.
My best time of the day is the hours between 6am and 9am.
Try to find a time when you can take the magnesium separately from the calcium. Apparently if we have an imbalance, too much calcium in relation to magnesium, taking them together can actually not be helpful as the excess calcium prevents the magnesium from being absorbed. What I tend to do, apart from my occasional Epsom salts soak, is to subsititute magnesium for one of the calcium supplements from time to time. So instead of taking calcium at supper today I will take magnesium instead. I know I get lots of calcium as a rule anyway and don't mind missing the occasional dose. There is magnesium in my calcium supplement, but I don't think it's enough to maintain the balance without a little extra help.
Hi Slosh I sure am hoping it's B12 too and not the Predisolone . It's the most awful trembling quivering jelly like sensation. Thankyou for your thought.
Hi I am experiencing the fatigue and jelly legs, still on 40 pred and have never felt it suited me, but as no alternative trying to get used to it, find having a lie down in the afternoon helps
Are you sure you aren't simply trying to do too much? Muscles can feel very wobbly at any dose of pred - and for some people it improved by taking the pred at bedtime so they slept through the worst of it. Trying to do more than your body is able will result in your muscles protesting - mine feel very wobbly when I do!
Hi there I was considering taking the Predisolone at bed time but concerned it will keep me awake. I'm thinking of trying it around 6pm .....it's all just a learning curve isn't it.?I manage about one hour of "doing things"then have to sit. Strange that this started 8 weeks into the medication though.
I think 6pm is even more likely to keep you awake if is going to do so. It doesn't have that effect on everyone - which is why a bt of experimentation is needed.
IF the idea of splitting floats your boat, taking 2/3 in the morning at a convenient time and the rest at some point but not necessarily evening may be enough to make mornings good. But being able to "do" for an hour and needing a seat is a sign you aren't pacing - or at least, not voluntarily. You are being forced to do so.
The disease itself is still active, it may be getting more so, the pred is only managing the inflammation and hence the symptoms due to that. The flu-effect is still there.
