Stem Cell Treatments

I attended a seminar last night relating to stem cell treatments as an alternative to surgery and drugs. This was for my own ailments having to do with knee issues. Most of it related, of course, to treatment of joint issues, osteoarthritis, etc. After I came home, my wife who has had PMR for 3 years asked me if I felt that anything I learned could pertain to PMR. I told her I did not think so, but I thought I would ask those of you on this forum if anyone has experimented with stem cell treatments for PMR.

Thank you,

Joe

Not that I know of. The stem cell therapy is to replace the damaged tissues as I understand it. In autoimmune disease you would have to destroy the existing immune system and replace it- which is done in bone marrow transplants. Very expensive, very hospital services intensive and potentially VERY risky.

Stem cell therapy is really still in its infancy. I think it was over on the Patient forum that I read about people who had very bad experiences with stem cell treatment and the lesson to be learned was to make sure if you go for it you must make sure the person offering the treatment is well qualified, experienced and has a good record. The problems others encountered had occurred at least in part because they had been treated by practitioners who were, to put it bluntly, cashing in on the opportunity.
