Hi I haven't taken that one but one the one I take settled it was very helpful. I have just looked up Mirtazapine and it says beneficial for anxiety and for better sleep. Have a good look at your info leaflet and remember by far the minority have the worst side effects. Only you can decide - for me feeling better is the main thing. I take ecitalapram which does benefits me and has done in long run for tackling social phobia and aniety as well as depression..hope you feel better soon.

It might take a couple of weeks or more to kick in. If you feel weird or anything go to gp.

I take 30mg mirtazapine at bedtime works wonderful because I have anxiety and insomnia I went for nine nights and days without sleep in June 2018 this is the first thing that has worked after trying 8 or 10 different drugs I have no side effects and it slows the tremors.

Although I was reluctant to take itin the first place....I am so glad I did. Down to 7.5mgs now and feel good.

Hi

I think of all the medication we are prescribed & subsequently take, people are often scared of an antidepressant.

It’s likely your GP has started you on a low dose first & l presume is seeing you within a month or sooner.

Don’t be afraid to try it, you may find it a great benefit to you.

My GP diagnosed me with depression last year & started me on 10mg of Citalopram daily & I’m now on 40mg, l have had no detrimental side effects but did get an improvement in my mood.

Good Luck & let us know how you get on.

Best Wishes

Mrs N 💅🏼

I don’t know this drug; however, be patient. Many anti-depressants take 30 days to become effective.

I am just like you Xanthe. I go to the doctor, explain my symptoms, get the prescription, take the medication home, read all the side effects then daren’t take it. It really depends how much you are suffering from depression and anxiety. There is a certain amount that goes with this condition and the meds we take for it. In my experience this comes and goes and I can talk myself out of negative thinking because I am physically ill and on Pred. If however your symptoms feel relentless and possibly associated with life events past or present, you need to do something for it. My preference is talking therapy with perhaps some cognitive behavioural therapy thrown in for the anxiety. Having been in therapy myself, I can definitely recommend it and the coping strategies it gives you. I still draw on those now. If you need to be rapidly taken out of a dark place, then maybe try the drug for a few weeks then report back to your GP. They seem to be fairly similar in their actions and side effects. They don’t work straight away and may take a few weeks to kick in. Good luck, Depression and anxiety are really horrible to endure.

I am taking Mirtazapine and am sleeping through the night for the first time in ages. I take it before bedtime. I was waking up several times each night in feeling like I was in a total panic. I have no idea why but I am sleeping through the night now. I started out with 7.5mg and am now taking 15. It is helping me.

How long does the morning groggy feeling last Lanakay? How long you been taking it for if you don't mind me asking?

in reply to Xanthe12345

If you do have a groggy feeling in the morning & you are only taking it at night, try taking it a bit earlier in the evening then you sleep the effects off xx

I started out with 7.5mg and now take 15mg. I take it about 10 or 11 before bedtime. I haven’t had much problem with morning grogginess that a good cup of coffee doesn’t cure.

Hi. It's difficult for me to tell me what you need to know without knowing more about your depression. Please excuse me therefore if I just wade in!!

Mirtazepine is prescribed for major depressive illness so is normally prescribed by Dr's experienced in mental health. because of the way it works, it does cause sedation during initial treatment. The side effects are typical of this class of drug (a presynaptic alpha 2- adrenoreceptor antagonist). There are several side effects but those which you may want to be aware of, because they mimic Pred side effects and PMR symptoms are; increased appetite with weight gain, fatigue, tremor, confusion, anxiety and myalgia (muscle pain).

Like other drugs in this class they may induce closed angled glaucoma, but this tends to be only in those people who have very narrow anterior chamber angles. Now since long term treatment with steroids can induce raised intrao-ocular pressures (IOP) this is manifested as an open angle glaucoma in those affected. So as with all things connected with health we are all different, and you may not be affected but you may be. If it was me, I would seek an alternative to Mirtazepine unless my mental health really justified it and I would get regular, expert ophthalmic examinations and advice.

I had mirtazapine a few years ago for depression, it really helped me, I was very low and couldn't eat, I had tried other antidepressants, didn't work, I asked the doctor if he could prescribe something to give me an appetite, he said one of his patients said he could eat the pattern off the plate with these, so tried it and it did restore my appetite and soon I felt loads better. , I can't remember the dose but it was one a day dissolved on my tonge

I have tried other anti depressants but they just seem to make the anxiety worse. I am seeing a geriatric psychiatrist. I was at wits end. I have had an anxiety problem since menopause and the PMR and prednisone seemed to just push me to the edge. At least the Mirtazapine lets me sleep at night.

I have only taken one tablet so far.....slept lovely. Woke up feeling a bit drunk, but better as the day has gone on. Damn steroids and pmr. But shouldn't knock steroids really.

Just out of curiosity Lanakay how much pred are you taking and how long have you had pmr. I am coming up to my two years on pred and on 8mgs. Not sure if I should start dropping preds again.

I was diagnosed last September but I think I have had PMR a lot longer thAn that. I just thought it was part of getting older until I could hardly stand it anymore. I still work part time in retail so was on my feet a lot. I started out at 20mg and am down to 7 now. I still have some pain in my legs and arms but because of my moonface and fat stomach I hate to have to go back up. The prednisone has really done a number on my head. I am thankful to at least be able to sleep now. I was just prescribed Mirtazapine less than a month ago. I also have lorazepam .5mg for any bad anxiety during the day. I hope I don’t sound like a nut but between the PMR and the prednisone this is where I’m at.

Tried several anti depressants in past and always suffered very unpleasant side effects with all of them but this one is brilliant. Allows me to sleep which relieved my anxiety and subsequently addressed the knock on effect of depression. Give it a go, takes about 2 weeks to work properly but positive effects start within hours. Don't be frightened it provided me with a sense of great relief and allows you to think more logically about what you need to do to make you feel part of the normal world again

Good Morning Mrs.Nails I feel a lot better today and not half as groggy! Thank you for asking. Hopefully, it will continue. Never realised how depressed I had got. 😀

in reply to Xanthe12345

No l didn’t either, l was a ‘smiling’ depressive, putting on a good act but in the end l couldn’t go on.....

There’s a school of thought that the effect of the Meds is much quicker than they first believed, so that’s good & it’ll be gradual every day & this sunshine should help too!🌞

Take Care 💐

Keep us updated xx
