Preventing loss of bone density????

Now, those of you who know me will be surprised at me mention superfoods - no such thing really! However, as things to add to our diet it doesn't seem a bad idea and it may work!!! All I know is that I eat industrial quantities of rocket (arugala), brocolli, tomatoes and cucumber together with the others on occasions and my bone density has hardly fallen in 7 years on pred.

It would also be interesting if they did the same study when people are on long term PPI's . I think the outcome would be quite different. A good study none the less.

This is really interesting as a vegitarian, when I was first diagnosed with PMR I was advised to take d3 and calcium. Then I discovered taking to much calcium could have caused problems and realising I was getting enough in my diet found D3+K2 in a liposome spray after two years on the product found most bone density readings had improved apart from hip joint, but can't reduce preds any less than two mg still have flair up on occasion and have to reduce again mostly after traveling hope this is of some use thanks

Thank you for this- I too have been eating rocket like there is no tomorrow! I suppose though we all need to be careful about not eating too much fruit .

I'm a believer in a good balanced diet, with little or no red meat, plenty of fish and all the vegetables you mention, plus some fruit, particularly blueberries and mangoes and, as I posted recently, the addition of prunes. I started on the recommended 5 prunes a day but have cut this to three - from which I hope to build up to 5 ( or more as advised by the article you posted) - as I normally have no bowel problems and the more usual effects associated with prunes were making themselves known. Beetroot was recommended by my pharmacist for vertigo and tinnitus and I have been eating it regularly and both symptoms have reduced without my taking the prescribed medication. Have to see GP this pm and will have to admit to not taking it!

Hi PMRpro,

My wife has had a heart valve replacement 12 years ago and has been on warfarin daily which we believe has affected her bone density as it prevents her absorbing nutrients and she cannot take vitamin K of course. She is being advised to take a weekly pill by the specialist, of alendronate which she is reluctant to do because of the long term side effects. She is otherwise fit and healthy. Any advice or comment on anything I have mentioned would be appreciated. John

A study found that there was no statistically meaningful increase in fractures in women on warfarin:

"... the women’s risk of fracture did not increase by a statistically meaningful amount on long-term warfarin therapy. However, men in the study who took warfarin for more than a year had a 63 percent higher incidence of fracture than men who did not take the blood thinner.

Patients taking warfarin for less than one year did not have increased fracture risk, and patients taking beta-blockers had fewer fractures than patients not taking beta-blockers."

What did the dexascan show?

Actually, it is vit K2 that is required for bone health - and vit K1 that interferes with the action of warfarin.

I think her recommendation is simply good for general health. However, a sample of 142 people is not significant to correlate increased bone health with specific foods. There are too many other variables to consider.

Eating vegetables and some fruit, low carbs, low sugar is the only way to go. I got off the program for a few days because of being with friends and family in NY but I will get right back because I feel better. I had no deviation for 4 months and fell off the wagon! Guilt has set in!
