Hi
I had mine for about 20 years and then brought a new bed and mattress,
I would advise to go to a good furniture shop and try them out don't forget mattress will feel different on different bases .
Take advice from assistance and take your time .
I had my heart set on a memory foam one but soon realized it was not for me their are some places that guarantee they will change the mattress if it does not suite you but have set time you need to try it.
Best buy I have had in a long time .

Hi - I have RA and GCA, and invested in an electric bed and tempur mattress 3 years ago - wish I'd done it sooner! I sleep better than I ever did with minimum movement during the night - unbelievably comfortable.
Hi,
I bought a good mattress. Having slept on Memory Foam it made me overheat and does make turning over more difficult.
A word of caution is that my new high quality mattress is so heavy that I cannot change the bed on my own .
I/we have a super king silk pillow top mattress which we rotate (or turn around) every fort night - the difference in comfort is noticeable and I do sincerely believe in not letting your mattress get too old before you invest in a new decent comfortable one.
At our age and stage (if we can afford it) is worth while spending money for the comfort thus returning a reasonable night's sleep - we deserve all the help we can get!!
Festive blessings to you.
We did exactly that. My husband has fibro and I pmr. We had spent a great deal of money on Tempur electric bed with mattresses about 5 years ago. Tempur suited neither of us. Turning in the night was a nightmare and painful and I ran terribly hot on the memory foam so sleep was always disturbed. So we kept the base as we like that and bought organic natural latex. Took some tracking down and months of research in the UK (more readily available in USA) They too were expensive as we had to have the tailor made size to accommodate the base but came with a money back guarantee. Oh the bliss of going to bed now. We both sleep much better and healthier than before.
Take a look at your bedding as well we have 450 thread count that I invested in a few years ago gets softer with age also being cotton washes great
Like Venizia1 I invested in and electrically adjustable bed. Mine has a memory-foam mattress and although not a Tempur, it has what is called a cool cover that wicks away any seat and excessive heat. It is the best investment I have ever made. I found I couldn't get comfortable lying flat and I kept propping up on more and more pillows, which started to cause more and more problems. I can now set the bed to the exact position that is comfortable and supportive for me. I still don't get much in the way of sleep, but I do get quality rest and it allows my muscles to be supported and relaxed. I don't wake up as stiff in the morning. The best position for me is with both head and foot area raised, so that my knees are higher than my waist, like a baby in a car seat and I don't need to change position all night as my back is supported. If necessary I can lift or lower my position on the odd occasion I need to move.
Hi,
I invested in a new electrically operated bed after my husband died, small double size. It lifts at head and feet, and although I don't use those facilities very much when I'm sleeping, it's brilliant when it comes to changing sheets. It lifts the mattress to a height that means you don't have to bend over and struggle to lift it at the corners to fit the sheets. Especially good if you got a heavy duty mattress! Before I was diagnosed I found changing the bedding an absolute nightmare! Now it's a doddle.
I wouldn't have thought a new bed would help the PMR itself - but it probably would help any other back problems.
I have the cheapest foam mattresses from Ikea on a plain wood slatted base - wonderfully comfortable and lightweight so I can move them. And note I say "them" - we have two 80cm singles on a 1.60m bed and use one "French bed" size double sheet so nothing falls down the middle! We also have separate single duvets - if one of us is hot/cold the other doesn't have to suffer too. There is never a fight over the covers and when one turns over it never disturbs the other.
I bought a new bedding set in July right after being diagnosed with PMR/GCA. Had been planning to anyway and the diagnosis just clenched it. According to my rheumatologist sleep is the #1 most important thing we can do to care for ourselves. I went to one of those mega sleep stores and tried about 6 different types of bedding. Ultimately bought from a local store (try to support them) and it is probably the single best thing I've done for myself. Having a supportive, comfortable bed is very important.
Thanks all for your responses. Have decided to get new mattress and am in the process of doing the rounds of mattress testing!
