Hi Just wanted to check if anyone notified their insurance companies I.e. Driving and health, and is it necessary when diagnosed with GCA

Hi Tobytomtom,

Notified my driving insurance people when diagnosed with GCA, had lost sight in right eye though! They weren't particularly bothered, just told me to advise DVLA. DVLA response was "give it three months and then if you can read number plate at correct distance and feel okay about things you can start driving again".

I'd suggest you notify both insurances just so you are covered for ianything that may happen in future. At least then you know you've done the right thing, and you annoy be accused of withholding anything.

Hi Tobytomtom, Yes you are required to notify both Insurer and DVLA! The reply from Dorsetlady is nice to see and I hope they treat you as nicely. For my part the experience was the opposite extreme. 11 months of sight tests at THEIR opticians and constant enquiries it toook to get my approval to drive again single-sighted! So I wish you good luck, but there's no way around it, you can't beat the system and it's better to be safe than sorry! raymck

Tobytomtom, and raymck,

I saw my optician and had a sight test on my remaining eye before

I advised DVLA of the situation, that is maybe why they were more accommodating with me.

In fact, much to my surprise the optician seemed to think I was capable of driving straight away because the "good" eye was still exactly the same as prior to GCA being diagnosed. I didn't, in fact it was nearer 6 month before I started driving again but I think that was due to other factors, if I had needed to, I could have driven sooner.

I wouldn't say my case was typical as my GCA was diagnosed after I'd lost my sight, not before like most people.
