How long it's takes from a 47% kidneys function to diaylsis level, I mean years?

My husband has pkd. He was 47% 4 years ago. He's now somewhere around 8%. Dialysis differs for each person. His consultant told him that some people may need it at 11%, some may drop as far as 5%, it all depends entirely on the individual, and how their gfr affects them. My husband has had a very gradual decline in his gfr. Around 2% every 6 weeks or so, for the last year I'd say. He says he feels fine, I imagine as its been so gradual.

Hello Wmspl,

It is true that with this disease, once egfr starts to fall, it is usually downhill.

However the time depends on each pacient. I mean, how well you’ll manage your blood pressure from now on (bp medication protects the working nefrons, as it is not the cysts, but the scar they cause that damage the kidneys); so take proper bp medication (sartan group for example); and do not, ever, take NSAIDs, that is, antiinflamatories (such as ibuprofen).

My mother was 15%, and her kidneys worked for 6 years before the transplant. No dialisys. She could have waited longer. So, don’t take a negative approach thinking about deadlines. You may have many many years of renal function ahead. Instead, looke after your health very well and enjoy each day.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes

Rick

Depends on how rapidly your function decreases. I believe in ADPKD people look at an average of round 5% per annum, and if we assume dialysis at 15% function, then 7 years. There is alot of assumption here - it could be quicker than that, or take longer. The best is to look after your health and make sure you check regularly (once a year) with your Neph.

Hello again Wmspl.

Just found a calculator, that predicts your future EGFR. The value is more or less equivalent to the renal function. As some have said, dialysis varies, but is done well below 15% if I´m not mistaken.

Here is the link.
