Hello Nevaehddg.

Not sure regarding weight gain but it is apparently said that some taking urso gain weight, others can actually lose it.

I was diagnosed Dec 2010 and been on urso ever since. For me I haven't gained any weight but I have probably lost around half stone.

Me too, I am very active and I do not suffer from fatigue. Tiredeness at times, often later afternoon due to itching previous night which brings me to ask, do you itch at all?

Reason I ask is because I think the reason that my weight hasn't actually altered a great deal but over time have dropped the odd pound, I reckon it is due to being itchy at night and spending a lot of nights fidgeting. I don't tend to eat anything following the evening meal, find I feel better but over the last decade anyway I have found I can eat like a horse at breakfast and lunchtime but then later afternoon taper off. I put that down to ageing. I will be 50 next month.

Women are quite prone to a shift in their weight distribution as they reach menopause (I am peri-menopause, started 12 months ago) so that might be why your middle is affected if you are perhaps at this stage.

The one bonus I think for some who aren't very overweight or feel they have gained weight they are not that happy about is that my way of thinking, it could be far better with having PBC than someone who is perhaps dropping on the scales.

Hi not got many symptoms but have just gone through menapause and I too have a lot of weight that I cannot move around the middle particularly.ive dieted but still cannot lose it.i work full time and walk my dog twice a day and often don't sit down properly till 8pm.i find myself craving carbs rather than sweet food(which used to be my downfall)I was always able to lose weight easily tho prior to urso.mind you when checking up on the powers of ursolic acid it is very popular with body builders and checking on animals that it has been tested on eg mice contributes to a high percentage of brown fat(the good fat)maybe why it's popular with fitness freaks.me?wish I didn't have to take the damn stuff.no easy weight loss remedies here I'm afraid but if you find one I would be grateful.gone from a twenty one inch waist to something unmentionable in the thirties!im almost 55 .good luck

Hello cazz22.

Interesting about your mention of ursolic acid and body builders, etc. Are you sure it is one and the same? Never come across anything like that before.

Possibly just the menopause, but it might be worth asking GP to check for other conditions - I think some thyroid conditions can lead to weight increase. I've found cutting the carbs and a tailored but gently progressing aerobic and weights programme at my local (not posh or expensive) gym has worked wonders. Mines menopause-related, but also change area - I can't walk or cycle everywhere, like I used to, due to pesky narrow country lanes and homicidal 4x4 drivers. Do not, whatever you do, move to the country!!!

Since being on Urso I have lost weight - not dramatically but enough to notice. I do find however that my appetites not what it used to be . Don't know if that has anything to do with having PBC.or not.

Hello IOW-girl.

Like yourself that appears to be myself. I don't put appetite down to PBC. I found after I was 40 (I am almost 50) I started to taper off eating later in the afternoon having been able to eat like a horse early part of the morning and also at lunchtime.

I put it down to the fact that as we get older we don't need the same amount of calories. I try to eat things that are pretty good for energy. I do have a pretty active lifestyle, no stranger to walking long distance and a bit of hill walking and elevations and I feel that I'm not actually skinny skinny as yet. (Some of the celebrities would make me look overweight at the side of them! I'm 5ft 2 inches tall and at present I weight around 8 stone 9.)

One of the other things to point out which might get some thinking here is that if I have been very active during the day, some more than others I do find that I can eat well at tea time so I don't think there is anything wrong at all here.

Hello cazz22. Your mention of ursolic acid got me thinking as I was sure when I once read about ursodeoxycholic acid it was not somehow ursolic. I think it is a different compound to ursodeoxycholic acid of which this is one compound of bile acid as it contains several different ones.

I looked on wiki and the compound that this ursolic acid is is: 3-beta-3-hydroxy-urs-12-ene-28-oic-acid).

Ursolic acid is found naturally in the following foods (quoted from wiki): 'Occurrences in food - including apples, basil, bilberries, cranberries, elder flower, peppermint, rosemary, lavender, oregano, thyme, hawthorn, and prunes. Apple peels contain large quantities of ursolic acid and related compounds.'

3α,7β-dihydroxy-5β-cholan-24-oic acid - this is apparently the components that make up ursodeoxycholic acid (from wiki).

Unfortunately this is a bit too technical for me but our urso does appear from this to be different to ursolic acid.

There is also a trial that is still on-going or completed on another bile acid component. Can't remember the full name but it goes down as OCA.

Try a pro biotic drink, in my case it seemed to be bloating rather than fat, and having a probiotic drink a day has really helped. My doc suggested it, I was a bit sceptical but very pleased with the results. I
