Is there anywhere (like Boots/ Lloyds) that do Vitamin B12 tests? My doctor doesn't seem to be concerned with my symptoms.

Your doctor needs to do order a vit b12 test along with folate, and a full blood count.

and when you get the results I urge you to ask for a copy and then post your results on

pernicious-anemia-society.org

My doctor didn't believe me either and it's taken 8 yrs for me to get where I am

I am b12 and folate deficient

all the best

This is quite a specialised test ,I had a very sore mouth and tongue ( toothpaste ,fizzy drinks used to cripple me with pain ) ,so did mouthwash Dr gave me . Asked my Dentist he got me referral to Maxilio Facial they diagnosed P/A and forced Dr to give B-12 Injections .

This is very interesting John. What, in particular, did the consultant see which prompted him to check for PA? I guess it was a sore beefy tongue but I'd like to know for sure as it would maybe help others experiencing the same symptoms and could be another option for them to ask to be referred to a maxillofacial consultant.

It was ulceration and a very pale tongue , he issued Bi ,B4 B6 from hospital but I delivered the sealed envelope to Dr surgery they did`nt contact me .

when after 2 weeks it was no better phoned consultant , he said go straight in ,

asked if I`d had B-12 injection told him I delivered his letter , he phoned the Dr.

really tore her off a strip , demanded I get the injection on my way home .

I always open the letters now .

Doesn't really surprise me John. Doctors haven't a clue about the signs and serious nature of this condition. Thank goodness for those isolated consultants who have updated their knowledge and can help those patients whose paths they cross.

There is a home test kit available which costs £29.50. It is a finger-prick test and you send the sample away. It checks both B12 and Folate. I haven't any knowledge of how accurate it is but I include the link here if you are interested:

Thanks for the replies! Do you think I should stop taking B12 sublinguals that I am taking for a while before this test? How long would you recommend stopping for?

You would definitely need to stop the sublinguals to get an accurate test result (or at least as accurate as the serum test can ever be!). I would think at least 6 weeks but, even then, it may still be higher than it would have been without them. It's impossible to say as the serum level can drop faster in some people than others.

Can someone please tell me why GP in england are so reluctant to give B12 injections i know that they work, did live in SA for a number of years and there people over 55 had them once a month and reported how well they felt and had increase energy,

That's a question that is asked many times. You'd think it was a dangerous narcotic they way it is guarded. Strange thing is that they will say no to B12 then hand you a prescription for anti-depressants or a serious type of pain relief. These have the potential to do far more harm than any amount of B12 - and they cost more - and they don't address the root of the problem!

I agree looks like will have to go private to get this injection which I know is really cheap alternative to painkillers and anti depressants, our GP thinks we are crazy when we suggest B12 injections maybe docs here need to do more research into B12 we know it works

Hi Andrea, You've hit the nail on the head! That was exactly what my doctor did - told I was very anxious and wrote a prescription for Seroxat when I went to him with symptoms that I had that were like so many people have described. It seems to be a doctors answer to many conditions! I didn't take them but was left feeling as if I would be wary of going to him again with same symptoms and don't know where to turn.
