Please could anyone help me with these results from my brothers test results today. The ranges look different, I can’t make out what’s going on. The Medichecks Doctor said he should have an MMA test done now. She says he’s borderline low. He has M.S. although we didn’t get a chance to tell her that.
Thanking you.😀

Hi, sorry haven't got much time at mo, so quick reply...has yr gp done any blood tests recently or have you had to get them done privately due to lack of help? That indicates a folate deficiency which yr bros GP should treat.
When I had active b12 test via Stthomas hosp, was told any b12 results between 25-75 would be referred for MMA testing due to potential b12 deficiency. Mine was 27 & had high mma result hundreds over range, so diagnosed with functional b12 defic.
What concerns me though is to what level we start having problems & are experiencing symptoms, but nkt receiving treatment due to being within these ranges.
My active b12 was 88 last Christmas, but I was experiencing very poor health and by Feb came to standstill with as sever neuro symptoms as I'd wish to have , yet no doubtbactive b12 was still within an ok range...so please always remember to consider symptoms and don't be fobbed off with numbers being ok!
Mma can help to diagnosed b12 defic. It needs b12 to break it down, this can build up if not enough available.
It's not definitive though, some folk have severe b12 issues but mma doesn't raise, also, mma can rise due to other factors, but none the less it is considered a diagnostic test for b12.
What s
ymptoms does yr bro have?
A cousin of mine has MS, she saw improvement in her health when on b12 inj, but unfortunately a change of specialist resulted in them being stopped!
There are many associations between b12 defic and MS, have u heard of the late Dr Chandrys work, his book is well worth a read in gaining excellent understanding of b12 & he has case studied & links to how b12 can help other conditions & in some cases misdiagnosed as having other conditions.
I spoke to him .once & he told me of a patient who'd seen top specialists in this country, wheelchair bound, & had been told she must have MS. He discovered she had b12 defic treated her very successfully with injections.
Know this is far from the case with everyone, but many of us have various conditions & illnesses that are not being helped due to lack of b12 treatment!
If it were me, I'd give those results to gp & at least if they won't accept them, they shoukd run them all themself. They should be able to do an MMA test, but saying that, I've never been able to get one from mine! Maybe yr bros m.s. Specialist would have more clout?
If not, food for the Brain foundation has just started doing them for £50, a urine test, which is considerably cheaper than others I've taken in past! I found them good to deal with, & prompt, just don't take to the heart the part that implies you haven't got a b12 defic if the mma comes back within range!
Keep asking on here, there's so many helpful & knowledgeable folk...and well done you for being such a caring sister who's prepared to keep an open mind and push forward for better for yr brother!
Thanks for your help. Unfortunately my Brother has been written off. Partly bad luck and also the system. I asked his doctor for the MMA test years ago when the b12 result was 189 I think from memory but the doc shook his head saying too expensive and begrudgingly gave John his first ever b12 jab . He is in a wheelchair and his left arm and leg don’t work. I think his medication (Gabapentin and Lorazepam or Tramidol, I’m not too sure) makes him even more depressed and he will not try to get a gp to visit him at home as he can’t physically get into a car or drive his mobility scooter that far. I’ve had to persuade him to pay for a private nurse blood draw and test with Medichecks. I have given him b12 jabs in the past a few years ago after his loading doses and he seemed to improve but he couldn’t sleep then he went a bit mad and nasty and tried to kill himself and everything has been very difficult.
He’s a bit happier lately and I’m trying to start him off again. I was convinced the tests would show low b12 and Iron. He has forwarded these to his gp who was going to do a phone consultation on the phone anyway on the 23rd so I’m praying they will start helping him.
We have spoken to Doctor Chandy in the past RIP a lovely man and he did say privately to me that my brother could be mentally unwell with his blood results in the past. I’ve read Sally Patchalocs book and joined the B12 forum for Pernicious Anemia which I think is the problem. Our Dad had that. So still trying everything. I will get him some Methylfolate as he can’t seem to take folic acid but waiting to see what his Doc says first that was half his problem years ago his gp kept giving him folic acid alone which didn’t address his b12 and made him worse.
I would appreciate some help with the iron results?
hi marymary7, I recently found a discussion in a doctors notebook site that discussed high(er) ferretin, low iron/transferrin and other things. I know I sent myself the link but won’t get a chance to dig it out until tomorrow …
