Scientist, not medic.

It's hard to get a transfusion unlessyou need one. Pure and simple.

Transfusions are there for emergencies, for volume replacement, but also to treat folks who have particular clinical problems that mean they can't make enough of their own.

Transfusions are very safe, but not entirely without risk.

I should have mentioned that transfusions are often life-savers, but can be a significant insult to the immune system due to 'foreign' proteins. The more you have, the greater the insult. But I'd have one as a life-saver.
