In my ignorance nearly pulled up a lone weed . Something stopped me.

It looked so strong

Following day a beautiful poppy flowered .

Looks like Papaver somniferum - the opium poppy.

They're all over the place. We had some suddenly appear outside the front of the house. I'm not sure if you can actually get opium from them.

Yes mine appeared out the front in a tiny bit if dry soil. Apparently(google) it's the seeds jn the centre that are used for codeine and other opiates morphine ect

The flower only lasted 2 days? Unless it was snapped off ?

Probably confiscated !Poppies look good before, during and after flowering - which is just as well as flowers don't last long. Looks like a few more flowers to come yet - and lots of seeds, so you'll have a swathe of them by next year. Dried seed heads lovely too.

I do that fairly often when pulling weeds, especially early in the growing season. If I do pull up a flower I immediately put it back in the ground. Usually it will continue growing. A weed is just a misplaced flower.

Yrs we have plenty of 'misplaced flowers' that remain. 😅Some are very pretty

Here on the east coast of the US we've not been invaded by ants but by cicadas. They're the 17 year variety. Their mating call is deafening and my car's windshield is constantly splattered when they fly into it.
