Is there any evidence to show that B12d can cause hyperthyroidism?

TIA X

There is a correlation but, as far as I know, no causal relationship.

So people with PA are more likely to have hashimotos'. But having PA doesnt, as far as anybody knows, cause hashimoto's.

It's the same way that people with big feet tend to have big hands. But big feet doesn't cause big hands.

I just wondered, as I know B12 is crucial to all cells, if your level is low over a long period, whether it would eventually cause disruption to your thyroid. I'm just trying to piece together what's going on with me at the moment

as fbirder says it's correlation that has been observed to date but no established causal link .... though the article suggests a few possibilities. I quite like the idea that the causal link is a tendency to develop auto-immune conditions with anti-bodies that attack one type of cell mutating to attack cells - but that's a theory and as yet a long way from a causal link.

Wow, that link is a read and a half!😂 Tbh a lot of it went over my head, but it seems aimed more towards the link with hypo rather than hyper. There seems to be nothing connecting PA to hyper, but I find it really strange considering the necessity of B12

apologies - hypo much more common correlation and I keep misreading your posts as a result.

Hi,

Might also be worth posting your question on Thyroid UK forum on HU.

Dunno, but I have both and the symptoms can be very similar. My endocrinologist (for hyperthyroidism) was interested to know that I had B12 deficiency too - as it too is largely an autoimmune condition - until I told him that mine was because of diet.

I don’t have an answer; however, I had Graves’ disease diagnosed in 2005 and 10 years later I was diagnosed with PA. So for me it would appear that Graves came first.
