Rytary and reduced absorption due to food

* Green Tea and Rytary*

I noticed that if I take Green Tea (Matcha and Sencha mix) with Rytary, there is poor absorption.

Any such experiences?

Those of you who are on Rytary, can you please share the experience with food. How do you manage, and how do you space it.

I just started Rytary last month. I am having trouble coordinating the intake of food with Rytary. If I have even a moderately filling meal, absorption is zero.

The doctor told me to wait 1 hour after taking the first dose on an empty stomach for my first meal and not eat anything at least 1.5 hours before the next dose. However, I find that this doesn’t work all the time. The only guaranteed response I get is when I am almost fasting the entire day. I am almost on intermittent fasting and this is very difficult to do.

Any insight from those on this medication will be helpful.

My husband takes his Rytary every four hours and doesn't worry about what food he is eating at the time. It works well for him. When he was on Sinemet he had off time.

Your concern is important. Gastric emptying and motility merit attention, as does food eaten during previous meals. A food diary might be helpful. Learn for yourself what an emptied stomach feels like, and how the first portion of the small intestine (jejunum) feels as a new meal begins to arrive. For me, some foods linger longer. Exercise helps, as does walking after meals.

I am impressed with the way you expressed yourself

My journey with Rytary been on it since last November I haven't had any problem except if i eat a meal high in protein or excess salt the drugs take much longer to kicked in

Am a Jamaican so most of my food is rich in protein so my work around is as follows

Dosage is 3 capsules 3 times per day 1st dose is taken between 7;30 am 8:30am this dose covered me until 1:25 pm lunch is taken 12 noon 2nd dose 1:30 sharp this dose carried me pass dinner am in New York

I am respectful of everyone who are involved in our care as we travel this journey as well trained as they are when it comes to our symptomatic meds we the patients and our family have a key role to play as we are the advisors to our Neuro in my case after trial and errors Rytary and myself are getting along very well

I advise my Neurologist as follows 3 capsules morning and afternoon 2 capsules between 5pm and bedtime

Rytary medication does come with a detailed small print instructions which is very informative

Observation

I am having challenges with my speech started long before Rytary. Since I am Rytary if I forget to take the medication and go into Off,as long as I'm off am not able to communicate effectively until the medication kicks in

Summary

Other than the protein and excess salt i am not encountered any red red flag

Rytary is a fat modulated formula vs sinemet which is protein sensitivite. That being said, Rytary is c-l dopamine and remains protein absorption competitive. I find that I have to eat smaller meals at least 45 minutes before and after dosing every 4 hours. If it isn’t working 30 minutes later I will take a 1//2 of a regular 25/ 100 c-l dopa.

All of this juggling doesn’t help with constapation issues.

I am very sensitive to protein. That is, any protein dominant meal or more than moderate amount of protein affects levodopa efficiency.

I take Rytary 4 x day.

First dose, 7.30 am. Breakfast at 8.00-granola, almonds, coconut, fruit.

Second dose, 11.30ish. Lunch around 12.30-1.30 (depending on yoga class schedule)-usually some cooked vege w/rice or potatoes, sometimes grilled cheese, sometimes hummus. Beans and cheese do not seem to affect Rytary as much.

Third dose 4.30ish, snack around 5.00-usually potato chips (low BP, doc advised more salt, so indulge). Dinner around 7.30-8.00 (-8.30). Eat whatever I want, so can be protein rich.

Last dose 9.00-9.30 pm

Like etterus, I supplement with 1/2 25/100 C/L about 1.5-2.5 hours after first three Rytary doses, otherwise wears off. Especially in am when exercise burns through my dopamine.

Hope this helps.
