First off, go and see a pharmacist and ask for an appointnent. Ask them to go through your meds, stating what they are for, what side effects they may be causing, any longterm use effects etc. Which ones you could manage without, or at the least changed to something less damaging, more effective etc. There are always new releases of meds and it may be that your gp hasn't discovered them yet.

Once you have some info behind you and you understand how your meds work on your condition, you go to your GP, consultant and ask them to help you reduce or come off them.

A lot of meds have to be reduced over a few weeks. This stops your body going into shock and gives you time to decide if you can live with a reduced dose or not. While you are in the coming off phase, you might want to try alternative therapies, just to give you a different focus on your condition. These are all trial and error as to which work. But give them 6 weeks or so before you decide there's no benefit.

You may find you can cope well during the day with reduced meds but need them to get to sleep. That would be a reasonable compromise in a reduction plan.

Its not an easy task, and requires quite a bit of time and patience. But if you don't try you'll never know.

That is one briliiant answer

Zanna is quite correct on many points, but in my experience the only tablets my GP was prepared to help me not take from what was quite a list were opiates, as all my meds were were prescribed by specialists in hospitals and were ALL maximum dosages... GPs are useless for assisting chronic pain afflictions as it is quite often outside their professional remit.. The quickest way off them is through will power and the full understanding that , long term use of any medications / drugs can and will have serious consequences on your overall wellbeing ,, even those meds that are supposed to help can in some circumstances be the cause of premature death...

Of course the correct procedure is in fact to consult with hospital specialist that you are under the care of and tell them your concerns and ask what would be their opinion on meds reduction... OR , you can do something stupid like I did and stop them all at once,,I really did suffer a lot more initially but after first month I was noticing huge improvements in both body and mind,, but as Zanna has said, use alternative therapies to assist as you should expect that this is not going to be easy and you should expect that u may feel worse before you feel better... But once you have started, stick to it, I used a very good osteomyologist in my local area and he was in my opinion , more helpful than all the specialist drug pushers of the NHS.. Learn to start reading about getting healthy and eating healthy . I don't mean run a marathon , but find what little exercising you can manage and you will reap the benefits ...

..certain foods if eaten correctly can and will have significant benefits on overall health.. We all know that good food is good for us, we just need to understand what it is we are trying to achieve in our health,, then find the foods and enjoy getting well, not getting used to idea that the meds are the ONLY way to survive pain free...they are not.. Although I still get some pains they are more bearable now than when I was under vast amounts of medications I am almost 6 months off ALL meds that I stopped all at once, and everyday brings me one step closer to being happier than I have been in years on all the meds... Good luck in whatever choices you make, and think that YOU are in control of your body, not the drugs... Think and be positive... It will pay back greatly

Hello

One of the problems here is that we do not know what the medication is or what it is for, you should initially see the GP if you are having problems with your meds, He knows your prognosis and the reasons why you are on these tablets also will know why you may be having the problems?. that you have.

If it is pain you are in there are many ways that He can assist, initially so ask him and if you need support you will find it here.

All the very best

Hello Healthy 83

You seem to have been busy last thirteen hours with your pills and your mother I hope we can help in both instances so what is the total problem that you find yourself in, it would seem that you are having problems not only with your Mum, also your meds. The best way here is for the both of you too go and see the doctor together, I would suggest a double appointment so He can see if he can help you both, Social services would be the best idea, see the GP he can arrange that

#The doctor will able to assist in some form of drug alleviation program as it can take some time to come of so many tablets .

I hope this sorts your double quandry

Good luck
