I have been on 50mg of tramadol 3x a day for a few years it has been giving me crazy headaches and does not seem to work anymore. Was in a major motorcycle accident in 2010 have 5 pins in my wrist & 3 titanium bars in my right forearm also my right shoulder is not connected. They put cadaver tendons in it in 2012 but they did not hold so it is not connected but works It is Really Heavy & painful some days. Is there any suggestions for a better pain med that you can take as needed that will temporarily make my pain a little more bearable?

I would go and have a chat with your GP about it. There are plenty more types of pain medications. If I were you I would slowly stop taking tramadol, why take something that's not working? But don't suddenly stop as you might get some withdrawal symptoms

If you are really struggling you can ask your gp about a referral to a pain clinic.

Hope you find some relief for your pain

Hi sounds like a bad accident you had and I'm not surprised that your arm feels heavy and painful some days. If that was me I would push for them to sort it out before it gets much worse. Ask your GP to refer you to a pain clinic so that they can try you on different medication for the pain. Don't struggle if you don't need to and I really hope they get you in soon. X

Frankly, I would be surprised if you HADN'T built a tolerance (very different to addiction/ dependency) in that time. Switching between medications periodically would probably do you good. Is there a reason you take three per day and not vary the dosage for good and bad days?

I wound't really worry about withdrawals, I've stopped taking Tramadol before with minor side-effects (running nose). Even stopped taking Fentanyl (plus all other opioid-based meds) recently to prove a point (don't like bring accused of being a drug addict, especially by a pain specialist). Wasn't a fun few days but noway as interesting as they make it out in movies.

I had a back issue for ages a while ago, when a Physio taught me to stretch properly, I was able to stop the medication almost overnight. I've had excellent results hot/ cold therapy. Learning to meditate has really helped me too (I used to think it was silly).

I took Tramadol and it gave me a headache. I told my doctor, she took me off it and my headache disappeared. Thank God.

Tramadol is like heroin - it’s highly addictive and you end up taking more and more with less and less effect as most drugs loose their efficacy after awhile. Much better to find alternative methods to control the pain, exercise, yoga, massage etc
