Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone on here with chronic pain has successfully registered as disabled in UK and what process you followed. 😬

Hello Copper283,

Not quite sure what you mean by 'registered as disabled'. There isn't a register as such for disabilities, unless you are blind (and deaf i think.) As a blind person I get a certificate of registration. Lucky me!

However if you are wanting a Blue badge then there is a procedure as is with claiming disability or out of work benefits. In Scotland we have free bus passes for disabled people and I believe some local authorities do them in England.

What did you have in mind? Anything in particular?

Hi Pat I was wondering about the blue badge scheme but I'm still working and chronic pain or associated symptoms isn't a qualifying option on the form. I was just curios

Aha the dreaded BB!

No they don't make it easy.

Can you walk? Not walk? Or walk with difficulty? Not being nosey but it is possible to get a BB without having the qualifying DLA?PIP which you can also get when working.

Not easy but most things are possible

Hi thanks for your reply. I can walk to a degree but if too far it sets off neuropathy in my foot and leg/back pain. I'll need to investigate this further 😬

The answer is NO you can not walk without considerable pain.

Golden rule = don't say you can do something which is painful. We are all guilty of saying...I'm fine.

You will need a GP letter i think but as you say - investigate and remember. It hurts

Hi, I got a Blue Badge, no problem. Just completed the form and stated that I couldn't walk without pain. I didn't need to get a letter from my GP but I don't know wether he was contacted or not, I never asked him!

It has made my life so much easier but it took my husband a long time to feel comfortable parking on double yellow lines ha ha!

I didn't have ESA or PIP at the time, I don't think it is a requirement?

I went to Boundary Mill this morning, I didn't realise the sale was on, I usually try to avoid the sales. I had my 83 year old Mum in law with me and there were no disabled spots left! I dropped her off and had to park half way down the car park! You can probably guess how I've suffered since, ooh the pain. I didn't want to let Mum in law down, had I been on my own I wouldn't have walked all that way, I'd have just gone home and gone back another day!

No sewndsew DLA or PIP HRM isn't a requirement but makes life a lot esier when applying. Like most things the LA make their own decisions on who may be eligible. Having that benefit helps.

Oh Boundary Mill. Almost as good as Dunelm!

Hi Sewnsew, I think that the rules have recently changed from when you first applied, I know they have since I first applied when I first asked all I had to do was fill in the form and send it off but now they either want evidence ie a letter from your doctor or the statement letter from being granted PIP or DLA I have just had to send in an new form as my BB is going to run out in July I am lucky that I recently was granted PIP mobility at the higher rate so i just had to send in a copy of my letter but for new applicants they will need at least a letter from their doctor stating that they have a great deal of difficulty in walking or else it will be turned down.

the problem is that they are trying to get rid of the millions of Blue Badges that people have that do not qualify I doubt anyone can say they have never seen someone with a blue badge park and get out of their car and either walk or run away with no difficulty which makes me very annoyed it is bad enough being disabled but to see so many people that appear to have nothing wrong with them makes it even worse.

Regards Poppy Ann.

Hi. I just wanted to add something to your comment about people getting out their car and 'walking away" and the fact that it really annoys you.

I have a blue badge, and sometimes get looks when I get out the car. There are many reasons people receive a blue badge, they do not have to be disabled. I have many complex illnesses, that result in pain when walking any distance. Most of my illnesses are 'invisible' and I can look quite well, but on the inside I'm in agony. Also, I have a mental health issue, which further complicates my ability to avoid stressful situations.

Please don't judge people by what you see on the outside because inside their pain and fatigue is very real.

Hi mrswitch,

I was not trying to get at you or people like you I doubt that you get out then run/walk away with no problems with you having severe difficulty in walking the new rules for blue badges are going to reduce the number of blue badges by several million, if someone can "walk with no difficulty" then they are not entitled to the badge being able to walk with no difficulty means you can get around on your own with no aid or help or without sever pain to do so.

you must have come across people who drive up in their large 4x4 monsters jump out and then jog away with nothing to show they have nothing wrong with them I once asked one guy why he was using a disabled bay to park after i saw him jump out then run into a shop and on his way out i stopped him to see if he was picking someone up he said he needed the larger bay to prevent others from banging his car doors because his car filled a normal size bay at the time I did not bother with doing anything about it but after I thought about it I should have reported him for using a blue badge when there was nothing wrong with him, around here in Mansfield there are few bays for blue badge holders as it is and with half of them being used by people who do not require one just stops people with a real need from using one, several times when i have been able to get out to my car and then try to go shopping just to find that there are no spaces anywhere near the shop and so all I can do is either sit in the car waiting for one to become available or to return home without managing to do any shopping, it is only around 2 or 3 times a month that I manage to get out of the house that to only be able to return home becomes depressing it is not that often that my pain levels are low enough to allow me to walk far enough to go from my car to the store it is over 3 years since I have managed to get into town as there are no parking spaces close enough to the shops for me to manage so this is the reason i put up the comment

"I doubt you have not seen someone park using a blue badge and then either walk or run away with no difficulty"

I hope this clears up what I was trying to get across.

Regards Poppy Ann.

Blue badge was applied for with a form from local council and I registered disabled with local council through social services who visited me at home (I have mobility problems). When I first applied I wasnt receiving any kind of benefit I just had to tell them how far I can (cant ) walk without pain. Didnt need doctors letters. Gentle hugs Joolz.x

Hi Copper,

To get the Blue Badge you will have to provide some form of evidence to prove you are disabled and to how it affects your mobility, if you use the guide as to wether you qualify for PIP (mobility part) if you go to this site it can give you a guide weather you will qualify,

gov.uk/pip/eligibility

also if you want to prove you are disabled then there is a site that is just starting up that can give you a sort of id card stating how your disability affects you and that is :-

accesscard.org.uk/

this is a site that is becoming the standard place to get registered and to receive a ID card that shows how your disability affects you.

hope this helps

Hi Copper,

No problem thank you for bringing up registering as disabled I went to look for my card and could not remember where it was so I sent for a new one and it arrived this morning so they do not hang around when processing your request and as soon as the new card arrived i found my old one but now i have a spare (which I bet I cannot find when I need it)

Hi, I have a Blue Badge, in receipt of ESA Support Group, PIP Standard Care and PIP Enhanced Mobility.

I have intense pain in my feet - had my Blue Badge before any disability awards eg DLA or PIP (last year transferred from DLA to PIP).

Your best option is to get in touch with a charity that deals with these kinds of things.

Here.......google: turn 2 us. They will help you, good luck.

I myself was given my DLA because of pain "Chronic Pain" as I was told recently by my GP, and there is more to it than that I suppose as I have wrestled with it for nigh on 30 years, but like I said to my GP, telling someone they have "Chronic Pain" I thought was a medical cop-out, but she assured me it was a recognized diagnosis, instead of what I think and that is just a ,'we can't do anything Diagnosis, and stop searching for the causes of, said pain, will not be beneficial to both ,the Patient, and of course the medical dept's involved, with kicking it in to the long grass, because pain must be from somewhere.

But I am waiting the new lot to re-write the rules, and deprive me of my only independence I have, for easy targets come no easier than someone with "Chronic Pain".

But fighting pain is a full time job in itself, and impossible to beurocratatise (sorry) I mean on paper it is hard to define and makes it easy to target as a malingerer or liar, or whatever, But just tell them the truth, and they are not that bad, as after all they have been judging people for a long time and must recognize differences,so best of luck copper, best Alex

in reply to coolpolitealex

Try not to set the future up before it is here! You will get PIP as long

as you get the right medical evidence and you explain in a clear way

how your pain effects your day to day life.

Try and let go of they do this and they do that, that is the past.

Let it go. Go forward and get you can. So not give up!

Thank you 😬💪

I applied to my local council for a Blue Badge. I was not in receipt of any benefits at that time and described the symptoms that I was having which made walking any distance very painful.

I was called for a medical and spoke with one of the health professional's employed by the council. It was not a bad experience at all, the lady was very understanding. She followed me about a bit whilst I attempted to walk and then took my pulse a couple of times. A few weeks later, the Blue Badge arrived.

It really has made a huge difference to my life and sometimes means the difference between going out and staying in. However, one of the downsides is the way that certain people look at you whe you park in a disabled bay as if to say, "what's the matter with you then?" Or maybe that is just me being paranoid!
