TV programme on pain - on now
Thanks! iplayer download time x
What was the name of the programme?
It was called Pain, Pus and Poison!. Dr Michael Mosley also said at the end of the programme that there is an OU link from the BBC website giving more information, but I haven't looked at it yet. Happy viewing!
I listened to some this morning. the bit about pulling teeth without any anesthetic made my toes curl. Also some words about it was manly to bear some pain and grit your teeth. Yup if you've got any left.
Interesting though if you don't know how nerve blocks work. Listen to the rest later.

Yes some of it was not for those with sensitive tums- made my eyes water at times. Interesting bit
later about how pain is transmitted throughout the body to the brain. They have identified the gene that affects those who feel no pain whatsoever. There are times when I would like that gene just for a break from my chronic pain. Happy viewing
Thanx I'm downloading it now,
Hello BOB here
Downloaded last night will view later.
Good title
BOB
Sure is Bob! Thankfully not too much pus, more about pain and poison.
I've just checked the BBC website, its going to be repeated on Tuesday, 10pm BBC4. I'm glad because I'm on a limited download broadband package.
It is more about the history of how pain killers were discovered and developed, rather than a guide on how to relieve pain. They are developing a new type of medication based on the pain free gene which will not be available for a few years. Yes it's as gorey as you would expect a programme on the history of surgery to be. Watch out for the eye op.
It was really Interesting stuff went into the history of the more powerful pain med's, I hope he covers the neuropathic pain system and THC.
That would be interesting. I was at the pain clinic this week and again spoke about cannabis spray that is prescribable for some MS sufferers. It states under NICE that it can be prescribed for other conditions by a doctor but at their risk etc. The pain nurse said that further research was being done in extending its use. A friend of mine with cancer is currently trialling its use as pain relief at the Christie Hospital in Manchester. So watch this space.
Interesting programme to watch with a little optimism for the future regarding pain 'Gene' identification and isolation, probably not in my lifetime though! The opening statement of ' Men that abolished pain' was, I thought, an overstatement, as I dearly wish my 'pain' was abolished!
I hope I can add my tuppenceworth without confusing people too much, I broke my Back, had osteomyelitis, and had a couple of head injuries over the years, Oh and carpal Tunnel syndrome, and believe me I have battled with pain for a long time, and the last one' " arthritis", now Moving as much as you can when you take the pills, proves that they work and after all these years I am baffled by what is the best thing to do, for no wonder we turn more neurotic, for there is distraction and when you do things without thinking, and if like me you get angry with yourself thinking that there is an element of psychomatic-ness or that you are not trying hard enough, and you start interpretating peoples looks as if they are your doctor, but they are not your doctor, and are only neighbours, and people will always think what they will think, I guess what I'm saying is that we are all different and our bodies react differently to drug's, so put away all the (worrying about what people think) and think as positively about yourself as can be, and as long as you know that you are where you are, and that you are in charge of your own b ody, so listen to it, and then remember that there are many things you can do, and many people worse off than you are, well at least when the pain does not demand your attention too much, and enjoy the days you have free' or the ones not as bad, it's hard and very annoying, but hey' at least you can play chess , ha ha best wishes to all,
