Sorry Suzannae, thankfully this is something I haven't suffered with. Have the hospital not given you any tips, or even the Macmillan Nurses ? I don't live in the UK any more so am at a loss as to tell you who to go to for support.

I hope someone on the site can help you.

Suzanne,

My Mum 71 had this 3 weeks ago, she was in terrible pain, it was a week before she was due to start her 1st Taxol treatment for reoccurance. She could not keep anything down. The doctor GP advised she had a bowel obstruction, he asked her what she was taking for constipation and she told him Movicol, he advised that she should take Lactolose first to soften the stools and then the Movicol to push things through. I think he also gave her an injection for the sickness, she could not even sip water without being sick. Withing a day I beleive she was much better.

If you need any more advise please ask and I will contact Mum .

Regards

Sue

Hi Suzanne sorry to hear about your mum. I have had bowel problems and have been bin nhospital more because of the symptoms rather than OC. I have been able to cope a little better now. I am on Movicol and Docusate to keep the bowels working and I have to be really careful with my diet. I avoid red meat and vegeatables like sprouts and cabbage. No bananas as they are hard to digest. Unfortunately no tomatoes or salad food which I love. I eat lots of chicken and seive everything as even little bits get stuck. When I have a bout of blockage it is really painful and if I start vomitting I usually end up in hospital. I have found that taking the antisickness as soon as I dont feel well, regular pain relief and a hot water bottle. The bottle seems so simple but it is so effective. Keep up the fluids and stop eating for 24hrs then small snacks for another 24hrs.

I hope this will help you, please keep in touch.

When my wife had this problem Movicol did the trick. She took a number (6-8?)in a few hours (6?). I think full details are in the box. Now she takes one or two when the problem causing drugs start. Good luck!

HI I am one of the support line nurses at Ovacome. Do make sure that you are properly assessed by the doctors before taking any medication as certain medications could make the situation worse. Try and stick to a low fibre diet and drink little and often. If you find can't keep anything down get in touch with the hospital. Do give us a ring if you want to discuss things further 08453710554

Best Wishes

Ruth

Hi

I had the same problem and was prescribed ducosate and laxido (the latter was really helpful and I took 3 a day sometimes). I also ate pears which arfe apparently extremely helpful to the bowel and drank prune juice. In terms of my diet, I ate more vegetarian foods and lentils but plenty of vegetables even if I had meat. All this helped me and I hope may work for you...Good luck!

During chemotherapy (carboplatin) I experience the most horrendous constipation and excessive amounts of laxatives did not help. My treatment was on Fridays and on the following Thursday everything was back to normal again. I began to expect this unpleasant side effect but knew that were i patient for six days it would right itself. It was just as if I had a barrow load of concrete tipped inside me - and ghastly! Good luck, Olive x

Hi Suzanne,

My mother experienced this (she passed away last week), and her doctors did an operation (don't know the specifics) to try and stop the blockage but they ended up doing a colostomy on my mum which ended up being permanent up until her death.. You should consult with your doctor about this option.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your Mother. My surgeon has proposed a colostomy, which would be temporary, but I am having a hard time with the idea and fear infection and skin problems. After a CT scan they will schedule the surgery to remove the regrown tumor and that is when I might get the colostomy. I'd rather know for certain in advance, but if they can take out the tumor without damage to the colon, I will wake up with out one. If not, oh well, I will just have to get used to it and learn how to be extra clean and keep my diabeties under control. Please take extra good care of your self this holiday season. Your Mother would want you to have the best life possible!
