Hi I'm always thinking of things to do with my little one but feel some days we don't have enough learning. She's approaching 9 months and we go to baby/toddler groups, when we are at home we play with loads of different toys some more than most, we have the normal toys some for fun and some that help with numbers and letters, we watch a little telly a mix of my programs and some for her. ( I secretly like my little pony more than she does and find myself watching it even if she's asleep lol )

I'm not worried as she will get there but she's not crawling or walking showing signs of possibly going to do one or both in the next few weeks she's just working it out at the moment. She has learnt to say Mum/mumma but not sure she knows what that means as she just says it whenever lol.

What do you do when your at home with your little one?

I also have the foam puzzle mats down instead of her just on the floor do you think that would hinder her movement?

I'd love to know your thoughts please.

I don't think you have to do anything expensive, I think they like exploring odd things like whisks and hair brushes etc. I've seen at the Children's Centre they do baskets of everyday objects to explore that you could recreate. I think they're called "treasure baskets".

Another thing which is cheap is at some libraries do "Story sacks" where you get a book, then there's toys/puppets etc to go with it, to make the story more interactive.

As the weather has been nice recently I'd be interested to hear of any recommended places to go with children (that aren't expensive)?

Hi BabyPigeon,

It sounds like you are doing lots together and have found a good balance! I sometimes worry we don't do enough in my house - But maybe that's just parenting! My son isn't showing signs of walking yet either but he does like bum shuffling. Foam mats sound like a good idea, do you use those in case she falls? :)

Thanks, yeah and we rent so if she is sick it's on the mats and not the carpet plus it's easier to clean. Lol

Bum shuffling is good some babies don't crawl and just go straight into walking I've heard.

At home, how about singing and action songs? Really simple things like 'Horsey, horsey' or 'Incey Wincey Spider' or 'This Little Piggy' always make little ones laugh, and as they get to know them they will start to join in with your actions.

Sounds as if you’re doing a lovely job and having lots of fun together. The other thing we do is go to the library at least once a week. They have a great selection of baby books and my little one (8 months on Tuesday) loves watching the other toddlers! He particularly likes lift the flap books and any book with a mirror. At home the books are great when he’s getting a bit fed up with his toys and he loves a cuddle and a story 🙂
