Endoscopy

Good morning all.

I recently got diagnosed with oesophagitis and a stomach ulcer. Do any of you have any tips or advice as I haven’t really had any results from the doctor who referred me. All I’ve had is a copy of what the doctor who did the endoscopy gave me and didn’t explain.

Hello there,

Good morning and welcome to the lovely forum here. Sorry to know of your diagnosis, though you have come to right source to seek support.

Suggest as a very first point of information digestion visit opa.org.uk and read about acid related items. And how to manage lifestyle etc. Clinical medications will be prescribed to you already and you will need to work yourself on making yourself more aware of the things about the diagnosis and managing your lifestyle.

Also there is a search function on the forum which brings all the relevant threads with your keywords, oesophagus and stomach ulcer. Definitely you will also get advice from the current members here.

Welcome again.

Hi there,

If the dr hasn’t prescribed already then they will put you on a PPI like omeprazole or Lansoprazole that will protect your stomach and help heal the ulcer.

Watch what you are eating acidic things , tomatoes spicy food and alcohol should be avoided.

Try not to eat late after 7pm so the food digests before you go to bed.

Hope you get to see the Dr soon

Best Wishes

Debbie

Hi Debbie.

Thank you for the advice.

I have been on omeprazole and taken off it multiple times. I’m currently on it again for the stomach acid. I’m on a dose to try and taper me off it. Just the oesophagitis I don’t really have much knowledge of

My gastroenterologist had a shocking piece of information for me. PPI’s don’t fix the acid you eat! He said yes, for me to continue with omeprazole 40mg AM, 20 mg PM but when eating acidic foods take tums also!

I find omeprazole is the only thing that helps with my acid reflux. When I was first put it on it I took it everyday for about three years. Now I try to limit it to twice a week because I am very aware that it does have downsides.

I have oesophagitis and take lansaprazole. You should be on stomach protectors for oesophagitis. This means that part of the oesophagus has lost its protective lining. You will learn to find which stomach aggravates it. It is not curable so you have to manage it. It it's more serious like Baretts oesophagus you will need endoscopies at least once a year to make sure cancer cells have not formed. Stomach ulcers too can usually be cleared by medication. Diet plays a big part in management of all digestive orders. Write down what you have eaten on days you feel discomfort. I can eat tomatoes, but not barley or peanut butter, but it may differ for you. Trial and error, but quite manageable.
