Constant burning in throat and severe nausea-- miserable!

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar to this. I’m 20 years old and have suffered from nausea and burning in my throat for several years now. I have seen two GI doctors who have tried a few different PPIs and have tested me for many things, but I continue to get worse. Currently I am diagnosed with GERD and Fructose Malabsorption. PPIs seem to help with “regular” heartburn which I would get after eating a meal, but the burning in my throat is something different. It comes out of nowhere, usually two or three hours after I have eaten something or when I wake up in the morning. It will last for 2-3 days (sometimes more) straight with severe nausea, bloating, and gas. During these spells I can barely eat anything and medicines like Gaviscon, Zantac, and Pepto don’t even touch it. Then, I will wake up the next day after having a spell and the burning will be gone, but I am left with a queasy/nauseous feeling most of the time. I have drastically changed my diet and don’t eat or drink anything acidic or irritating. I don’t have coffee, chocolate, sauces, fried foods, etc. I also don’t smoke and I am pretty underweight. Does anyone have any ideas or tips? I am so desperate for relief that I am willing to try anything.

Hi,

Sounds very unpleasant, I total feel you.

I suffer from burning throat and mouth.

I’ve just purchased d-Limonene, 500mg tablets. Read about them and try them if you want.

Have you had endoscopy yet?

Yes, it's awful. Ok thanks for the idea, I'll look them up! I have had an endoscopy, but it only showed mild gastritis.

Sounds unpleasant if the sore throat is caused by reflux acid pooling then you may benefit from sleeping propped up on pillows on a slight incline.

You may want to see a throat (ENT) specialist too

Good luck

Hi I suffered for 3 years. Eventually had surgery called nissan fundoplication. I do not have any heart burn anymore. Or acid reflux. The operation was not very nice. Have you had an endoscopy. That shows if your stomach is irritated. And if have a hiatal heria. Hope you get something sorted

Nurseryjan and I agree you likely have a hiatal hernia and definitely need an endoscopy. First, get your bed up on six-inch cement blocks. Raising the head will prevent reflux or help it when you end up laying flat.

I too had a fundoplication and it ended reflux but not before my esophagus developed Barrett’s Esophagus which can lead to cancer. I just had radiotherapy at Cedar Sinaii and it’s unpleasant.

Get the endoscopy and stop this before it gets worse. Wishing you relief and recovery.

I have had an endoscopy, but unfortunately all they found was mild gastritis. Basically they said it was normal, gave me a PPI, and sent me on my way. I would definitely like to raise my bed though. Propping myself with pillows isn't enough! Thanks for the advice, I wish you the best in your recovery as well!

How long you had acid reflux for before you had fundoplication?

I’m 40yo and lots of people say they don’t advise operation if you’re over 30, not sure why :(

I had an ulcer at 16, heartburn thereafter, reflux when pregnant at 37 and developed Barrett’s Esophagus about 5 years ago. I had to push at Kaiser to get to see the surgeon but he was for it and I had NO reflux after or since. Such a lifestyle upgrade. The fundoplication ‘slips’ usually after 3-5 years so lateray be better but Barrett’s can turn into Esophagal cancer and that’s bad.

If your reflux is bad, see a doctor about this fundoplication. You don’t want the next step.

You too & the doctor next door said all his patients with heartburn or reflux use the blocks and never progress to Barrett’s Esophagus and burning in throat stops. Guess I’ll ask him about RLS too:)

I suffer from the same problem. I found out it bile reflux and not acid. I tried eating curry and found it stopped 90% of reflux. I now eat a curry every day.

Go see Stavros Stavropoulos in New york at Winthrop Hospital . He is the top doc in the nation for esophageal disorders ! It sounds like really bad gerd. I assume you are eliminating every thing with Frutose- Many vegetables also have fructose, like peas and zucchini . Look in it up on line. Eat dinner earlier! Try visbiome probiotic with dinner meal. You can order it on amazon or sometimes Rite aide- ask pharmacy for it. Go see an allergist and get prick tested for allergies- such as pollen , dust, cat , dog, mold etc. These can cause post nasal drip which can make the throat burning( gerd) and reflux worse. I started allergy shots and most of the burning stoppped for me. I was moderatley allergiic to tons of things in the air and the combination of them all was causing post nasal drip, particularly at night. Also, accupuncture can do wonders!Really! Good Luck! Sandy

I have nausea too and I thought it was omeprazole that caused it, but I am off omeprazole for 10 days and nausea is still there. I don’t know what to do anymore.
