One of the side affect to my chemo was oral thrush which made me feel quite unwell.

My last bout of chemo was dec 2011 followed by an op jan 2012, the evil thrush returned 4 weeks later and so I was given tablets to clear this up, but now 6 months later I think the dreaded oral thrush has come back has anyone else experienced the same thing?? I was given at the time fluconazole tablets which after a few days I did feel a lot better, so it looks like more tablets for me again, anyone got any thoughts on this subject I will be most grateful.

Hi Tina my husband Nielsen suffered horribly with thrush too when they did a scan they saw he also had it extensively in what was left of his oesophagus he needed a prolonged course of Fluconazole but it did clear it up - it was very unpleasant though and left a horrible taste in his mouth - aloe mouthwash helped - so I do fel for you. All the best.

Thank you so much as I thought it was just me at times, and I will try the aloe mouth wash as well as getting more of the tablets of the doctor.

Thanks lyn.

Hello Tina

I was lucky in that I didn't get that problem on chemo but a friend of mine did and the nurse suggested he ate plenty of pineapple so when the medication did not work he tried that and it worked a treat - might be worth a try - I think pineapple contains some kind of natural remedy.

Hi Tina,

I am nearly 3 years post treatment and am fighting thrush it has gone down into what is left of my stomach and oesophagus. (I didn't realise what it was to begin with and let it get hold before I went to the doctors) I have done two courses of Fluconozole and am now doing another course of a different anti fungal to try and clear it up. I will try the mouthwash and pineapple juice tips thank you Lyn and Mick.

Good luck Tina.

Best regards

Liz

Hi Tina,

I agree with the pineapple tip, it does help. I also had to take high doses of antibiotics for quite some time and ended up with thrush in my digestive tract. I startted to take a high dose of Acidopfilus. It is full of the natural bacteria your digestive tract needs. My doctor recomended the probiotic drinks, but since my surgery I cannot digest dairy, so the natural acidopfilus was ideal.

Hope this helps

I had it in my mouth in hospital, I think because it was so long since I had had normal liquid going through my mouth, and as I recall I had some stuff that I had to apply with a kind of brush, which softened the hard scale. I cannot remember the name of the medication (but it was 11 years ago!), and it does not sound as if it would have been any good for thrush further down in the system anyway. So that probably is not much help!

Hi Alan, your's sound quite harsh regarding the brush but as you say it was 11 years ago and the medication they give you now is very good but like most things it does return!!!!!!!!!!!!!
