hi hoping for some advice my dad had an Ivor Lewis 6 years ago, he has done well but sometimes he gets this gagging problem and feels really uncomfortable and full. This has been for approx two years he’s had a scan and they couldn’t find anything as to why. The last month he said he feels really full and uncomfortable and no energy, he said the feeling is like full in the sternum am hoping if anyone has any ideas am going to call his team next week but rather worried. Would really appreciate some help if possible xx
Ivor Lewis : hi hoping for some advice... - Oesophageal & Gas...
Ivor Lewis
I am 14 years on and have what a nice surgeon called a flabby gut with a U bend, where it's been stretched and as it doesn't do the peristalsis thing too well I get wind and food stuck, it feels like I'm really full, eat or drink anything and I will overflow, sort of like when a pipe has an airlock and nothing will go down. I feel tired and exhausted and uncomfortable. I find it really difficult to berp unless someone bangs my back a bit like a baby or arms up in the air, and I try massaging my gut to move the wind on.
If you feel yuk you don't move around and food sort of just sits and sticks around sometimes. I find eating very small meals or just grazing for a few days, eating some quick energy food, cakes, biscuits, sweets etc and moving around a bit more than usual. I drink more too to try and shift the food through. It does often end up with some very varied poo colours and constituencies. Do talk to his medical team and get every thing checked out, does he take tablets or liquid meds to help with the mobility of food through the gut?
Hope you get some answers soon cheers Lizzy
Liz explains it perfectly our whole internally attomany changed ecause of the surgery and continues too as your body acclimatises and stretches.Small meals and often are the best way x
Great reply from Liz. I had a few years worth of tests and we found out everything flowing through the while system had slowed down and I needed motility meds. Took a while for them to kick in and it 80% resolved the issues. It may be worth talking it through with his doctor.
Have had any stretches performed ?
I have had to reduce the quantity I eat in one go and sometimes go to liquid calories such as cream of soups xx I am just over7 years post Oesophagectomy x
unfortunately it is a big side affect of having this major plumbing work done. Does he diarise everything he eats and what brings on the issue. Is he having enough antispasmodic/antisickness drugs and hour prior to eating/drinking? Deltacortril-enteric (Pfizer) is a synthetic crystalline formulation of prednisolone with far less side affects.
Perhaps he needs to go onto a totally different diet, that puts good bacteria into the gut, it’s been majorly compromised and the slightest of change is quickly felt.
I’m a post op two months and having been suffering sickness bouts every two hours and sincerely hope you get on top of this issue and wish you all the best.
