Almost 4 years post-Ivor Lewis here.

Yes, every time I eat or drink.

I tried eating even smaller amounts and chewing more before swallowing (taking longer) to no effect, so I mentioned it at a check-up. They said that it's just another one of those post-op. consequences that (like others) affects some people more than it does others and that in my case that they wouldn't investigate further unless it caused problems.

So I live with it, although the amount of wind (burping) seems to vary quite a lot from one day to the next. I'm not sure which is worse: wind from burping after eating or (ahem) wind from the other end which is another post-operative affliction in my case.

If you're worried I would suggest either contacting your team if that's an option for you, or (as I did) mention it when you next see your consultant.

But it would appear to be quite a common problem, and I've seen it said many times that it takes our bodies a few years to settle into a new normality after an Ivor Lewis.

That reply might not exactly fill you with relief, I know. But if nothing else you know it affects other people too.

Best wishes to you.

I'm 16 years post surgery and I still burp a lot after eating or drinking. I think it's something to do with the fact that the stomach is so much higher up. It's not a problem for me, more so for those around me.

yes, 5 1/2 years post surgery I seem to burb more than pre cancer. But not enough to bother me

My 8 year old granddaughter calls me burbby poppa.

Hi there,

I had this and had lots of tests for SIBO and other things.

They all came back negative and I was put on Sucralfate. It disappeared on taking this morning and night along with other gastro meds.

May be worth a try.

Best Wishes

Debbie

hi Von66,

I used to have quite a lot of burping, but it has stopped now. I know what can guarantee me to burp of have wind…sugary foods. Or any food that transits too fast. The following may help.

1. Imodium to slow the food/drink down. (Not too much).

2. Bacterial supplements to get the good bacteria growing (I use bio-kult).

3. A nice warm drink in the morning first thing to flush through your gut.

I hope above helps. Keep us updated on your progress.

Jay
