Queasy feeling/Nausea after eating

My husband (64 years ) is 20 months post IL Surgery & continues to experience a queasy feeling / nausea immediately after eating (lasting 30/45 mins).

He has slowly been regaining lost weight (low of 65kg to 71kg currently , from a pre surgery weight 87kg). This queasy/ nausea feeling is ongoing with little or no improvement notwithstanding taking motillum (10mg) up to twice daily before meals without real benefit. He also tried Valoid 50mg, but again, felt little benefit. Have other members experienced these symptoms & if so, do they improve/resolve over time? Is there anything that helps ease the discomfort?

All suggestions welcome

Many thanks,

Rose

hi, I’ve only had this with excessive quantities. Maybe try smaller quantities spread out over time and avoid drinking with eating. Hope this helps.

I am 5 years post esophagectomy and I find I get nauseous/ queasy maybe once or twice a month, but typically before a meal. I take a 4 mg Zofran that dissolves under the tongue, and it typically takes care of the nausea.

No pattern to when this nausea comes on.

I am not familiar with the drugs you named. These are what my oncologist here in Atlanta has prescribed for me for my nausea.

Hi Rose. As I posted earlier I am ten years post op and I had the same problem for some time. These days I sometimes feel a bit sick after the first time I eat in the morning. I’ve started drinking green tea with ginger (Twnnings ) before I have breakfast and this seems to help. I generally avoid greasy food like fried breakfast but now and again I can’t resist and put up with the consequences. My doctor told me it is because we lay in bed all night so when we get up and about it takes a while for our new plumbing to settle.

Best Wishes, James.

Hi Rose - yes I too have experienced and still experience nausea after some meals and to be honest have never fathomed exactly which foods trigger it. I don’t take anything - just sit it out and it usually passes within an hour or so.

I've been experiencing the same feelings about 30% of the time. I am 2.5 years post-op and it doesn't really matter what I eat, kind of random, Eating less is better, but then more difficult to keep weight up. I usually wait it out, 30-45mins, sometimes rest after the meal if I feel lethargic. Doctors have not figured it out either.

My husband and I would like to thank you all for your replies. It is reassuring to know he is not alone in experiencing nausea/ queasiness after eating and are hopeful these may lessen with time & daily management. Little & often & Less is more are our daily mantras.

We find this forum very supportive & really appreciate all your inputs/ suggestions.

Thanks again, Rose

Just came back here after a long time. Didn’t have Ivor Lewis, but I’ve felt that way for decades. Used to suck on mints. Over the last year I’ve found that ginger really helps.

hi Rose, I’m sorry to hear your husband is having nausea after eating. It’s quite common with our operation. What is he eating and drinking prior to nausea? Is he waiting 20 mins after drinking before eating?

Thanks,

Jay

Thank You Jay, Yes, he is very mindful of the amount & when he eats and drinks. Unfortunately, this queasy feeling is still persisting but hopefully it will improve with time. I hope you’re feeling well.

Thanks again, Rose

Hi Rose, I’m just 2 years post Ivor Lewis and I’m 53.. I do feel nauseous but not always after eating it’s quite random really. I do still eat small meals 4-5 times a day and I do find that helps. I’ve gave up gluten 6 months ago and feel much better for that too. It’s a journey we are all on and learning what our new digestive systems like and don’t like. Your husband has gained weight so that is good. I try not to worry about it all too much and keep active. I hope he starts to feel better soon xxx Sue

Thank You Sue for your reply and encouragement. Avoiding Gluten is an option to be considered as he generally doesn’t feel well after eating bread.

I wish you Well on your own journey to recovery.

Thanks again, Rose
