funny you should bring this up now as on Friday I was ill for 5 hours..and I am 12 years down the line...I seem to come over very shaky and could hardly put one foot in front of the other...it didn't help that I was on a country walk and had a longish walk back to my car.

Hi Liz, I'm 11 years post op and still have dumping episodes, but I seem to be able to control them better, but don't ask me how 😂 And still no rhyme or reason as what I eat one day is fine but next affects me. I think as time has gone on I just appreciate every day and take what comes without getting anxious.Hope you're keeping well otherwise

I was doing fine for years but since I got pneumonia last year it's got steadily worse.

Hi Liz I,m 14years post op and also have dumping episodes and other related problems. However recently I have started to eat smaller portions at more regular intervals. This has helped especially when I concentrate on eating slowly but sometimes that's a problem when you are starving. It's worth trying Liz. Phil

Hi Liz, I’m 6 years post IL and although have far less episodes these days, I find Im always only a few minutes away from Dumping and life turning upside down for a bit, being quite unwell. Im very careful what I eat and have to eat slowly and always follow the surgeons guidance of remaining sat down for 30 mins after eating. Triggers are many, now I avoid refined sugar and am lactose free ( gluten free too as coeliac) but if I eat too quick or food that is cold, especially from fridge I will always get dumping. I take food out fridge a couple of hours before eating ( even though it goes against what I used to) and need to eat every two or three hours or I will be ill. I’m underweight so have to eat little and often. I really miss a cold glass of wine and ice cream in the summer but have cut out lots of other things which isn’t great but reduced dumping and better for it. Always need to be mindful of eating . I wish you well.

Hi Liz - I’m nearly 6yrs on and my dumping is completely random now a days and I have even linked it to tiredness now to - I’m on the go all day - I sometimes forget to stop and sometimes when I finally sit down in the evening I will dump quite badly x

You are right I am in the middle of moving and starting a new business, I also find that the more I have done in a day the more likely I am to get dumping. As you say it’s totally random, my resting sugar levels seem to be creeping up too just feel really yuk

I am nearly 4 years on have still have problems. My blood sugar is high enough I have been diagnosed pre diabetic but cutting out even more sweet things is only causing weight loss. Aparently it is possible for the surgery to affect the pancreas function. I am trying to chase a very long overdue appointment for gastro enterology to get this checked out. I have been tested for lactose intolerance and bad bacterial growth but apparently there are more conditions that can be checked for exept covid has put a halt to a lot of such things. I think we all just have to try and work it out as we are all different but I would encourage anyone to get any possible resulting conditions checked for.

I am 4 yrs post. The diagnosis of a prediabetic scared me enough to eliminate all sweets and most carbs. I wear a 24 hour glucose monitor. I rarely have any sugar levels above normal. I still get hypoglycemia events that have completely stumped the endocrinology team. I have had every possible test, there are no answers. I do not follow a keto diet but there are some great recipe's, super high fat. Strawberry fat bombs, garlic bread (tastes real but is all cheese), and bagels.

Hi, Liz. I'm not long-term post-op, but, for what it's worth, I found the best explanation of dumping syndrome in the article linked below:

barixclinics.com/blog/when-...

It's written for people who are contemplating gastric bypass surgery, so it is not directly aimed at IL survivors and one needs to read between the lines now and then, but it is the best and most informative explanation I have come across yet, very simply explained in layman's terms.

I must admit it hasn't stopped me from experiencing periodic dumping, but I do have a better idea of the mechanics.

I have dumping (like a hypoglycaemic event) but never quite sure what causes it as there is no clear pattern. I just accept it as part of life, I actually thought it went away as I didn't have an 'event' for like 2 months but then had it twice in 3 days. My view is it will happen, but I am better at detecting it and getting on top of it. I know if I start feeling tired and my pulse quickens I need sugar. I find a sweet drink such as cola or ice-cream help me recover quickly. When going anywhere I carry candy with me just in case.

How do I even begin? Just wanted to reach out to someone in the U.K. with first hand experience. Not diagnosed, but struggling with symptoms for week now and have severe acid reflux for years now. GP has put me on the back burner due to covid and I had a gastroscopy done in 2017 with no issues. Hope you can kindly guide/advise. Thanks

Hi there!

I would contact and keep hassling the gp as 2017 was a longtime ago and since your symptoms haven't improved and have worsened then you should be referred on if they can't help.

The waiting lists are very long at the moment and it would be better if you are on the waiting list for an endoscopy being done.

Regards,

Cosmobabe
