I came home from the hospital with the feeding tube inserted following surgery, but did not have to use it. It was removed a month later. I was given a syringe and had to flush the tube twice daily and change the bandages 3 to 4 times a week making sure to clean up the crusted part around the tube where it enters the abdomen. This is where the infection can occur.

Like Onebox21 I left hospital with the tubes still in. That was way back in March 2012. Told this was a precaution just incase I had trouble eating. Given syringe to flush out and dressings to keep it clean. After about a month a consult with the surgeon to check everything is ok and eating ok. Then feeding tubes removed. No problems with it being sore or any infection.

I had mine in for almost two months but I was in ICU for most of that.

I had very bad burning on the skin around it the size of a large grapefruit. Dreadful actually.

They used to put Mylanta on It to help with the burning.

Hi there, my husband had his op in March 2019, had the feeding tube in for nearly 4 months. There was about a 3 week delay to getting it removed though as he could not get an appointment to get it removed.Keeping it clear was the hardest thing Over that time and it blocked a few times. No infections in that time, kept it clean and over taped it 2 times a week.

Hi Von60,Even if you are not feeding via the tube, you'll have to diligently flush the tube twice daily; clean the area where tube is inserted so crust do not build up causing infection.
