Out of ICU but still in lots of pain

Hi All. He is out of ICU and started to having jelly and soup. However, he is in lots of pain in his chest and the hospital doesn't seemed to find the correct dosage or something it will work for him . I wonder what is the average stay in the hospital after the op and when he will start chemotherapy which they said he will have it. Grateful to hear yoyr experience in this matter.

Morning, fantastic news that he is out of ICU, I think the normal stay in hospital is 10-14 days as long as no complications I do know of people who have had to stay longer due to leaks etc. My husbands pain was kept under control and he did so well and was home in 13 days but it is a very long road with many twists and turns no 2 people are the same. His post op chemo started 8 weeks after surgery (as Christmas was in between) which he tolerated well and completed all 3 which I hear is no mean feat. After surgery, has he been given an epidural? Unfortunately my husband’s epidural didn’t work and he was in great pain for 2 hours after surgery before they gave him ketamine and morphine.

His epidural did not work as well and they are keep trying different pain killers at the moment. He is using fentynal patches as well as morphine. Thank you for your reply.

Hope they get to relief his pain without further delay and he get to rest. Although it would be hard to sleep long as he would be woken by nurses taking his stats throughout the night!

Well, he had a brave battle and hope to hear that he is recovering well to be able to go home after the usual 10+ days or so.

Very much so I hope he will see that way soon when the pain eases a bit. Thank you for your reply. We are waiting the surgeon to see h8m and tell him what happens next.

My husband spent only 7 days in hospital and was lucky to have no complications during recovery. That was 8.5 years ago and he is still fine aged 85. Eats anything but smaller helpings. Probably unusually fortunate.

I hope its been checked for but a pain surrounding chest and axacerbating with minute movements or talking coughing could be plural effusion. This is when the fluids collect in the lungs cavity. As a possibility please have somebody hear his chest.

Out of ICU is good progress, as most complications happens during that stay.

Oral intake is 👍 he will soon up and about and back home in no time.

Pain is relatively subjective for each patient and finding a working dose of a pain medicine without side effects is a work in progress or learning on the job. Allergies and reactions are developed for pain medicines as well. Have faith.

Thank you for your advice and I will tell him about it. Yes they have found fluid in his lung and drained it whilst he was in the ICU. He has been referred to see chronic pain specialist. I will try my best to be positive.

not the drains I meant. This is past that.

My husband peter he stayed in hospital for 3 months after operation but he had complications and got pneumonia x
